New MIDI user needs basic help!

Hey

Ok, I want to start using MIDI. I have a computer which will be able to handle it fine (PC Celeron 400, 196meg ram, 30gigs, etc) and I also have a somewhat classy Yamaha keyboard with midi in/out ports.

So.. the question is, what sort of hardware do I need to be able to use programs such as (for example) Encore or Finale and take the input from my classy Yamaha keyboard?

My soundcard is a SB Live! and it doesnt have the same sort of port on it as the 'midi in/out' on the keyboard.

Please give any suggestions as to what I need to be able to use my keyboard to input music into the computer.

Thanks

-Mike

Hello Mike,

You need a joystick-to-midi cable, it will set you back
15 bucks, and thats it!

One end connects to your joystick port on the SB live,
the other end has a midi in and out, which connects to
your fancy Yamaha keys. It is as simple as that.

In Encore or Finale, change the Midi options to
SBLive in and out, should be self-explanatory. You
will also be able to play the GM patches on the SB,
a few (like Harp) are actually pretty decent.

If you find yourself in Cleveland anytime soon, I
got a joystick-to-midi cable in my box of unwanted
toys, its taking up space in my cluttered apt, so
its free .
If you have any more questions feel free to email.
I lack experience in audio, but I am pretty good with
midi.
Cheers, David
