Hi. I'm new to midi.

I have an SL-760 midi controller that I have never used, though I've had it for about 7 years, and I'm trying to get it working with my PC, but so far haven't gotten the computer to recognize or communicate with it. At this point I just want to be able to play it like a piano, I don't even care about recording just yet. But it has no built in sounds and I don't know how to access and work with midi sounds on the PC.

Is there a driver or plug-in that I need, or some setting in Windows XP that I need to change? I have a SoundBlaster Live! sound card and have the Fatar plugged into its 15-pin joystick port. I downloaded a freeware sequencing program called Anvil Studio, but no response using the Fatar. I've checked the volume levels, messed with sound card settings, don't know what to try next. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

is the Fatar switched on? =) jk

um, i don't know that equipment. the game port connection sounds real old fashioned though...maybe try a MIDI -> usb cable? or get a MIDI interface? they're not expensive.

i don't think there's much MIDI setup you can do through XP, if any...but you should be able to select a MIDI device. it seems like you haven't chosen a MIDI input source, so the computer and/or Anvil (never heard of it) isn't listening for signals. if you double click the grey speaker icon on your windows task bar (bottom right) you get into the audio control section and can make some setup choices. but i reckon the SBL should have a much better, more comprehensive setup facility for your machine. make sure you've got a MIDI output device selected (correctly, it'd probably be the SBL's internal midi).

you shouldn't need any additional drivers or plug-ins for XP to accept an incoming MIDI signal.

maybe take the keyboard to a friend or to a instrument store to test that it's actually putting out.

good luck =)

The last computer I owned with a built-in midi port was an Atari ST. You do need a midi to USB cable and an appropriate driver to add midi to a PC or a Mac...

Can't I just go from my midi output on my keyboard to the midi in on my soundcard? Or am I missing something here?
