I finally got myself a pair of Octava 012s......

I got 'em wednesday, and was dying to try them out.....so even though I didn't get the chance to record a whole produced song or anything, I did a quick one shot instrumental take just to test them out.........

I took some of the low end out w/ eq...a touch of compression and verb.....that's it

Any comments on the sound would be great, as I'd like to hone the sound the best I can before jumping into doing a song w/ them........

it's just called 'instrumental'.......

it's taking a long time to download.. even on a cable modem..

I'll be back in a few hours!

I tried to stream it hi fi,just kept buffering, then studdered so bad I had to download it.
Took about 25 minutes with cable!

In the meantime I listened to Erlands tune,it streamed real slow as usual, but no buffering or studdering,I don't get it?
I checked both mp3's,there the same,44/176.
Weird!

Anyway, the acoustic sounds great Drew, very sweet.
Open G?

Did you get a matched pair?
Really nice stereo spread.

It sounds a little rough on some parts, but that's normal I think.

I had to really tone down my playing, and switch to a light pick.
I like to hit and slap the guitar, and generally beat the crap out of it!:D
Just dosn't sound good when I record it though.

I think you got a real winner with your mics, looking foward to you next song with them.

Pete

hmmmm....that's interesting with the streaming problems, as i don't think that's happened much to me in the past......

pete, 25 mins w/ a cable modem? isn't the file under 3mb?
yeah, this was in open G with a matched stereo pair. i think i'm like you, and i'll probably have to tone my playing back just a touch to get the best sounds out of them. thanks for going through all the crap to listen...hopefully that's just a server problem that will clear up

Powderflanger,
Sounds absolutely gorgeous on headphones. Nice and bright. Nice stereo spread. What were the mic positions, and what kind of guitar?

Twist

yo twist,
thanks for listening man. for the mics, i had one about six inches slightly off centered and pointed at the sound hole at sound hole level, the other was about six inches higher and six inches further back just kind of generally pointed at the guitar.

the guitar is a guild d-55.... and it can probably take just as much credit for the sound as the mics.....it seems to record really well, almost as if it has it's own little built in compressor:D

The first two bars reflected that this is the smoothest acoustic recording I think I`ve heard on here since arrival. So smooth, that it sounds more like sitting 4 or 5 ft away in real time and not hearing any physical incidentals of the guitar other than just strings. The player and the tone of the guitar play a big part I`m sure, but the clarity and natural sound picked up in those mics is truth..

Sounds damn good to me. Man I need to get some mics :(...and a better guitar :(. I know I've been advised to get monitors before new mics...but sheeshh...then I'll have to retrack everything I do until I get the new mics.

Nice work...sounds like you should have fun with these. :D

never could hold a stream, so i d/l this. Man that guild sounds fantastic with those mic's. I wanna guild...real bad. I wouldn't be hesitant to record a tune with that tone you got there powder...sounds great man.

It's studdering for me also but the tone sounds good!

I haven't had too much luck micing the soundhole myself. My stuff sounds real boomy when I try that.

Congrats on the new toys

Joe

sounds good to me. I'm listening on a tiny set of computer speakers, bit it still sounds good.

I had no problem streaming.
I just finished tracking a little acoustic ditty... AND NOW I WANT TO GO BUY A GUILD AND SOME OCTAVAS.. DAMNIT DAMNIT SON OF A BITCH!

Toki987 - the discription you provided is really the sound i'm going for, so it looks like i'm finally getting there with these mics

Jagular - i still don't have monitors, and just this first recording with these mics has made me gald i got them

David - yeah, i don't know what's up with my stream, it seems like there's been some problems.......get a guild david, you'll never regret it....i love mine

Smokepole - it was kind of boomy micing the soundhole....not really, but i cut the lows below 100khz w/ eq

Doug H - thanks for listening man

demensia - yeah, i've always been a huge advocate of guild acoustics........ and now i am of ovtava mics too.....good to hear the stream might be going okay again....thanks for listening

Jesus Christ Almighty.....this sounds awesome.......

man you sure are getting all of that Guild out of that matched set.........

Good playing too...

BTW...cable modem....took me 30 seconds to DL the MP3....

I thought it sounded very nice. But 'stereo-ized' thru EQ and delay, almost more than a stereo ambience. The midrange and guts of the gtr on the left, and a slight delayed, more high freq. content thing on the right. Very sweeeet sounding though. Would probably do great in the 'right' mix. As a solo, it seemed a little 'left' heavy to me.

I'm gonna guess the mic placement was pretty different for each mic, rather than just separated with the typical 3:1 issue.

joro - thanks for checking it out

mix - thanks for the listen.....what exactly does the '3:1 issue' imply? i'm new to the whole stereo micing thing........

This combo sounds great! Now I hate you! I can't get my Martin and Oktava to sound so good as this!

The 3:1 rule means that when you are recording with a stereo pair of mics, you should keep the mics three times as far from each other as they are from the source. For instance, if you are micing the guitar from 1 foot away, the mics should be three feet apart. This is to minimize phase cancellation.

enjoy those mics!

Powder"Fangar",

He he.

That sounds nice. I would love to hear some big ass vocals over the top. I expecially like when you walk through the room and open the door in the end. Nice touch. :p

Sounds like you use a light pick. I heard a bit of pick clicking and tapping on the top or pick guard. Most likely would vanish with accompanyig instruments.

Great work.

Commie guitar sound?

Sweet tone man-I got a pair of mc012's myself-and I think they're great mics-for acoustics and drum overheads-I was amazed how much better my acoustic sound got when I first tried them-Even just turning in my chair I would hear the air moving through them...Hmmm I see you mic'ed the sound hole--sounds damn good-try putting one facing the neck around the 12th fret or so--that's worked well for me-I've been meaning to try the "over the shoulder" technique that Harvey Gerst reccomends as well....

Anyway--your track sounds great-your recordings just went up a notch bro! Nice sounding guitar too-always wanted a guild...Looking forward to your next full song with such a nice acoustic sound.

sounds great over here! I was hearing vocals as soon as it kicked in.. Zeppelinish to me.. I know nothing about recording acoustics, but I really like the sound of this..
