Hi all,

I have been using a cheap mic for recording stuff on my comp with cool edit for a while. I was recently given a Tbone mb-85 mic as a gift, and when I hooked it up to my sound card I get hardly any sound at all. Now I'm not sure what the problem could be...any ideas anyone?

Welcome!

What you need is a microphone pre-amplifier. The signal that comes out of the mic is too weak for the recording medium, it needs to be amplified to line level before it can be recorded.

This is an example of an often recommended, inexpensive, beginner pre-amp

Search on google for pre-amp or pre-amplifier if your interested in the real technical stuff.

yea.. i wish i got a proper answer when i had that problem

u can also use a mixer with xlr inputs, if it has a pre-amp in it (mostly labelled as "invisible mic preamp"..)

That's the little "gain" knob at the top of the channel strips on the mixer. Most mixers have rca line-level outs (usually tape outs) that you can send out to the PC's line in. Works nice enough.

I'm not familiar with your mic. Is it a condenser mic? If so, it needs phantom power, which your sound card won't produce. Either way, you need a mic preamp.-Richie

I did a search on it and it appears to be a SM58 clone, in which case it no doubt needs the preamp but not the phantom power.
