but why not put everything else in that category. I guess that is all I am trying to say!
It's not the tool, it's how it's used that is being frowned upon by most of us. Maybe we could be clearer about that - though if we're not, not not because of a lack of effort on most of our parts.
Reason and digital editing doesn't get the attention and ire that Melodyne or Autotune is because most people are not USING Reason and other such digital editing products to substitute for musicianship. Just because they
can make people lazy does not mean that is how the majority of people are
choosing to use them.
It's the same argument about multi-band compression. The issue most people have there is that they have absolutely *nothing* against multi-band compressors, they have problems with their unenlightened use as a poor substitute for the mixing process.
I have absoluetly nothing against handguns or the ownership of them. I feel that is an individual's right. But when gang bangers come on these forums advocating their unregistered use to take down non-gang bangers, calling it the new world order, yeah, I have a problem with that.
You know, the absolutely ludicrous thing about this - and NL5 hit this pretty damn good when he asked "where's the button?" - is that the truly best uses of Melodyne/Autotune require just as much work as the lazy ones are trying to avoid when it comes to trying to re-engineer a lousy performance. Most of the one-button "automatc" functions in these applications fall way short in sonic quality versus more tedious and more work-intensive manual editing for many of the purposes for which they advocate their use. It's often faster or easier to just re-track and get it right (unless the performer is a hack, of course.)
