New Jongleurs tune - Gravity (Like A Spaceman)

Even before I got stuck into the subject matter, this reminded me of Bowie because of the vocal tone and instrumentation. I'm really impressed with the quality of the mix - holds up well again professional recordings.
The one thing I might suggest is perhaps ending with a drop chorus followed by a full scale chorus set that fades out leaving behind only the original sample of "that's one small step" and end there. It might be worth trying... then again, might be a sh!tty way to end. Sometime I've no idea the worth of my ideas!

Without looking at the other comments....
- the intro seems cloudy but that may be the effect you're going for. They do that in a few top 40 tunes lately like Madonna and stuff. It brightens up nicely as it gets started.
- I would like to hear the little solo instruments (on the sides) pop out a little more in the mix - not much but jsut a touch more.
- The snare might be a little loud - I kept wondering that as I listened. I've heard that they are supposed to be as loud or equal to the vocal but at times I felt it was just a bit over the vocals.
Really super tune - minor mix stuff really. Love love love the lead guitar playing :D:D:D:D

Hi - thanks for listening... what you're suggesting sounds pretty similar to how we do it live... when we stop playing and just sing and then fade the sample in at the end... but I think I'll leave it the way it is for now! Cheers...:D

Hi Ido... Yeah, I was a bit each way on the snare too... after spending hours and finally extracting a semi-decent snare tone from Addictive, perhaps I just wanted to hear it more! LOL... I've turned it down just a touch and also popped the supporting guitars up just a touch as well... I agree with you on that one too.. Thanks for listening... :thumbs up:

Dude.... I love this - especially the chorus. Lyrics, harmonies, chord progression, it all sounds awesome. As far as the mix goes, it sounds like there might be some mid-freq build-up during the choruses, too, when everyone is harmonizing. There's also some weird stuff that I can't put my finger on concerning space (pun intended hehe). It seems like FX / reverb might be mis-matching for different instruments. Hope that makes sense.

Love the song, dude!

Thanks dude! I've been touching the mix a bit here and there based on people's feedback and continued listening - and I've thinned out some of the harmonies in the mids a little as you are right, there's a bit over much in the chorus. I'm much happier with it now. I've got two different reverbs going - mostly everything's going to the reverb bus in various amounts, but there's one of the guitars that I've used a separate plug in on, and what I call the "space guitar" track, the echoey hi freq one that just has harmonics, was recorded with FX so that might be the mismatch you're hearing..

Thanks for listening!

Cheers

Hey Armistice. I've been waiting for this - I don't think I've heard any of yours before, but was interested to hear how you got on with Reaper and the samples we recorded for you (:cursing: :D).

This sounds really good to me. Not sure I can help with the mix much, but I like the song and the recording and mix sound great to my ears. I listened on some decent headphones, so could hear much of the detail. Great job! Really nice backing vox.

Were the drums real or canned - I can't remember if you're one of the guys I've seen talking about Addictive Drums - if so, I'm very impressed with your results. If not, they sound very good anyway!

Did you have any reverb on the strummed acoustic guitars? They sounded really close - not a mix complaint, they sound fine, just interested in your methods.

Yeah where's all the “One giant step...” samples you asked for?

Hi Manslick.... I apologised in the original thread for not using them... I just couldn't make it all work, although I did try. Sorry dude and thanks for taking the time, but in the end, Neil worked better!

Cheers

Hi Johnny - thanks for listening... glad you likde it!

There's probably a touch of reverb on the acoustics, but it wouldn't be much, given other tracks are a bit more drenched. I record them with an AKG451B in the "standard" position - off the 14th fret etc. and I use a Neumann KSM104 (my stage mic of all things) parallel to the fretboard as well. Most of what you hear is the 451 with lows rolled off a notch filter up a bit higher, with a touch of the 104, which is where I put the reverb (normally) if I use it.

The drums are Addictive Drums, but I spend a fair bit of time on them and don't use loops, just program them in a hit at a time and use various "tricks" to try to make them sound a little more realistic... I'm gradually learning what to do. I'm pretty happy with them too.

I've done a remix based on all the feedback but haven't posted it at this stage...

Cheers!

Hey can anyone who heard it first time around have a listen to the new mix (same link...) for me please if you're anywhere near your monitors?

I keep getting this feeling that I've clipped it in the chorus with the "mastering" (lol) I did.. using a plug-in (GClip) I barely understand. But I can't make up my mind and I'm nowhere near my gear at the moment to have a good listen. Just getting this niggling thought listening to the version I have on my iPod on the way to work...

Thanks dudes...

Hey David. WOW! Great song ya got here. You have done well my young Padawan.

Nice work with the wha-wha pedal any more than that and it would have been space p0rn. :D

Looks as you have reaper well under control. The force is strong with this one.

At the end of the song you should put *Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.* I think it would make an exultant tail to your song.

*Dif-tor heh smusma* -
For you Earthlings that don't speak Vulcan *Live long and prosper*.

Just finally took a listen (guess it's your latest mix)...good song and very well done, as usual.
You always get some sweet guitar tracks...rich and articulate tones.

I'm feeling like maybe the drums could come up a bit to give the song a little more punch...but just a tad.

Chorus sound fine to me. The verse vox could be a bit clearer (louder?).

Thanks Manslick... there's always something to adjust! I'm giving it all another listen today to finalise it... I hope! Cheers:thumbs up:

Hi miro... yeah I gave the "overheads" just a touch of a bump as well as the dedicated snare track, which largely just seems to add flavour and not much volume - thanks for the feedback!:D

Yeah, live I normally use my looper to record a wah wah sample before the song starts, and repeat it at that spot as we go along.

I'm pretty happy with it, although I'm getting a bit sick of listening to it!

Hey Armistice - just getting to this one now and assuming the mix at the top is the latest, right?

Sounds really good overall. The song itself is a little more straight-forward and catchy than some of your other tracks I remember. That for me is a good thing. The harmonies on the chorus are awesome.

The mix sounds really good too. I'm just listening on bookshelf speakers w/ a cheap sub, but for me, the lead vocals could use a little more presence. They lacked some of hi freq clarity that the guitar tracks displayed. That was just my initial impression though. Sounds really well done to me.

Hi heat... thanks for listening!

I think my voice just lacks hi frequency clarity generally.... :D I should let the other guy do all the singing, but this is my fave of my tunes. I've put the mix to bed for now as I'm a bit tired of listening to it but I'll have another listen in a couple of days with your comment in mind.

Cheers mate..:thumbs up:
