New HDD Problems

So I ordered a new 1TB SATA HDD from newegg and I just got it today. I took out my IDE HDD's and put in the new SATA disk. My mobo recognizes it, but for some reason when I put in my windows cd's (winXP & Win7) the "press here to boot from disk" option doesn't come up and when I boot from my old IDE HDD the new SATA HDD doesn't appear in my computer.

I've tried booting directly from the DVD drive, I've tried booting using my old IDE drive and installing windows from there but like I said when I boot using an old HD the new HDD doesn't appear in windows, I've tried disabling the IDE drives, I've tried changing the boot order but I can't figure anything out...


Any Ideas? I hope to god this drive isn't DOA
 
no, the drive just needed to be partitioned but now I've got one helluva new problem...
Since I installed the sata HDD, nothing wants to boot... at all.

No OS bootable disks will boot (I've tried two different winxp discs, a vista disc and a win7 disc), no HDD's will boot... the only thing that boots AT ALL is this wannabe hirens disc.

I've got all of my drives formatted to NTFS using the wannabe hirens disc but I CAN NOT get any OS disks to boot in order to install an OS on my HDD. Right now I'm borrowing a friends laptop because I can not get my own PC to work....

Any ideas????
 
Did you change the connection of the OS drive?

You have probably corrupted your MBR (Master Boot Record).

Return the drive with the OS on it to the original connection(SATA1, SATA2, IDE, whatever)\

Disconnect the new drive

Change your boot order in the BIOS to boot from CD-ROM first, then HDD.

Make sure the HD with the OS is first.

Reboot with your valid Windows disc in the CD-ROM drive and do a 'repair install'.

Once you get into windows, and everything is OK, shut down and connect the new drive to he NEXT available SATA connector, and restart.

Check in BIOS Set-up that the drive is recognized.

Reboot to windows and format and partition the new drive.
 
Could be several things, which one depends a lot on the age of your motherboard. Here are a couple of things to check:

First, make sure your Mobo supports SATA at 3.0 transfer speeds. Some of the first motherboards to support SATA only support it at a slower 1.5 speed. Your motherboard manual will tell you - if you don't have it, look it up on line. If your board only supports 1.5 then you need to set a jumper on the hard drive to throttle back the speed. If you don't do this all sorts of bizarre things can happen, anything from the drive not being recognized to it working but losing data.

Second, go into your motherboards BIOS and look for a feature called SATA Operation. It could be in one of several places depending on who makes the BIOS. Under this heading you will find a couple of options, one will be AHCI mode and another will be Legacy or IDE mode. Since you are using Windows XP, you want to make sure you pick the later. The former is prefered for running Vista or Windows 7.

As for your booting issue - the next step in trouble shooting that I would try is to physically unplug ALL hard drives and see if you can boot up from a Windows XP CD. I assume you are using an original CD? Also, is your CD / DVD drive an IDE drive or a SATA drive?
 
Well it has to be the mobo... All my drives, all my OS bootable cd/dvd's boot up with no problem on another PC. I installed win7 on my new 1TB and it booted up just fine on my friends PC but as soon as I get it back into my tower, nothing works again...
My cd drive is IDE and so are all of my other drives except for my 1TB which is sata.
 
Oh and there are no sata speed settings on the mobo, there are no sata operation options in my BIOS... And I've tried every combination of hard drive and cd drive order and pairs you can imagine and still not a single damn thing will boot.
 
So I guess it IS my mobo?

No more ideas or anything? Anyone?

I'd hate to go off and buy a new mobo if this one can be fixed...

So this is just a second drive and not one your are going to have the OS on correct? I ran into this problem once where it wouldn't show my SATA drive. I honestly forget the solution as it was like 5 or 6 years ago, but I think it had something to do with either the Mast/Slave setting of the IDE, or something in the BIOS about having SATA as the Master...although I don't believe they used that terminology as there is no "master/slave" in SATA, I believe they are all equal.

I don't want to sound like a rich prick, but just buy a second SATA and ditch the IDE. I mean your IDE has to be getting old at this point anyways.

I might have missed the issue(s), but why not just go into the bios, make the ROM drive 1st, and SATA second, then unhook your IDE all together and install the OS on the new drive.

Because the computer refuses to boot any kind of OS device whether it be IDE, SATA, OS boot disk (CD or DVD)...
it WILL NOT do it, I've tried different jumper settings, I've tried resetting the CMOS, different boot orders, I've tried both IDE and SATA at the same time, I've tried them individually, I've tried different OS's on different drives, I've tried every single boot disk I have and anything that resembles an OS is rejected by the computer.
Oddly though the computer will boot this hirens boot disc clone that I have... but that's literally the only thing it will boot
 
I edited my post after realizing I read it wrong...its in reference to your IDE Windows not displaying the SATA drive.

That was the plan until all this BS happened.
It's really driving me nuts.
