OK so I'm a complete idiot. There I said it. Just mounted my new removeable hard drive in place of my removeable main hard drive. I'll be loading the OS (98SE) in and using for audio work only. The main drive will be in unless I'm recording, then it's replaced by the audio drive. No problem with BIOS setup, format or partition. It's been a long time since I set up a drive and I can't remember what files have to be on the floppy to get the CD ROM and CD R/W drives to work. Have pity on me and explain step by step.

Just an FYI- Why not use both drives and just store the audio on the removable? But depending on the speed of the removable it may actually be worse than your old drive. Is the new one 7600RPM?

They're both Maxtor 40G 7600 RPM drives. Using the removeable drive setup is my way of ensuring I don't get a virus on my audio drive. My son and wife play on the internet. The drive will be clean with only the OS, audio software and tracks on it. If I need a plugin, etc off internet I'll download it onto the other drive, virus scan and put it on a floppy or CD to load into the audio drive.

well, thats one way to do it. Sorry I didn't see your post earlier, I would have been happy to explain what files were needed (I use Win98 boot floppies constantly at work). Of course the good ol' startup disk works too.
