new guy seeks guidance

hey all. im not a complete newbie cos ive been producing for a while but only basically. i also dj and have quite a bit of live engineering experience.
basically, i am starting tot take it a lot more seriously. next year i will be starting universtiy and studying production so im sorting out a basic home studio. i run acid, cubase, wavelab and soundforge. i have recently purchased a soundblaster audigy platinum mk1 card with i/o drive as i think it has less gimmicks than the new mk2.

outboard wise i have bought a behringer virtualiser pro multi effects rack mount unit, and am on the lookout for a 8-12 channel mixer probably 2nd hand or maybe a behringer.

basically im looking for any guidance as to what to get to start with. any tips etc.

First off, dump the Soundblaster. Great for gaming, lousy for audio.

Secondly, I recommend saving a little longer and avoid Behringer. Their stuff will do the job adequately, but in the long run you'll end up selling it for better gear. For mixers, look at Mackie, Soundcraft, Yamaha MG series.

What do you intend to record?

Acoustic instruments? Vocals?

I generally agree about dumping Soundblaster's but your Audigy can get you going. If you are going to do vocals you need to concentrate on a good quality Mic and preamp. Tell us what you intend to do in recording and you will get more help.

I agree...stay away from Behringer. Although their amp modellers for what they are, aren't that bad. I emphasize for what "they are", LOL..
