Hi, I've just joined the bbs here and I'm looking forward to getting to know some of you and maybe picking your brains a bit as I wade into things! I'm from Eastern Canada.

OK, so after about 20 years of procrastination etc, I've decided to build a studio in my basement. I've always wanted to do this and finally ran out of 'reasons' not to. I'm on a tight budget, so most of the gear I'm looking at will be bought used. I am a musician of very limited talent, so this will be primarily for recording other people's music. I've put together a list of what I think seems like a good idea, but I'd like to bounce this off of some of you. Here's what I'm considering.....

- Mackie VLZ Pro 1604
- 2 x Alesis XT20
- Alesis Quadraverb Q2
- BBE MaxCom compressor/sonic maximizer
- Mackie HR624 monitors

So, my specific questions are:
- Is there anything obviously flawed / stupid with my choices so far?
- What about mix-down? Any recomendations? DAT? PC?
- Any recomendation for mics? I have a SM57 and a 58, but I'd like to have a couple of more mics for mic'ing drums, guitars etc and a decent condenser for vocals. Don't really know where to start with mic selection.

Thanks for reading and for any help and advice you may have. This probably won't be the last time I'll need some advice here :)

i'm from canada too.
also check out cad mics, beyer mics.
maybe get one nice preamp for lead vox eg... fmraudio.com
reallyn nice mic preamp.
i like yorkville monitors (canadian !) popular with folks on a budget.
if you want a nice piece of multitrack software pgmusic.com powertracks.
used by loads of canadians. 48 track audio and midi recording including 24 bit and built in fx like reverb /echo. talk to other users like myself on the
powertracks forum at pg. lots of pro's you can learn techniques from.
think about a delta 44 sound card. very popular.
if you dont have a computer. consider an amd athlon with 512 mem
and 2 fast 7200 rpm drives.
peace.
