I am a beginner at guitar...not newbie...beginner, and I am ready to purchase my 2nd guitar. What guitar would you guys recommend me getting for under $200. (I play mostly rock, mostly recording right now).

hi Abbott...the best thing you can do is save the cash you have right now...then, save another couple hundred bucks--till ya got 400-500 $--so you can buy a used gibson or maybe a fender...a quality instrument is something that'll last forever--you may even like it so much that you'll never even consider "getting another guitar", and then you might even become fearless with it...later.

well, it seems like he wants a guitar now and he wants to spend $200.....

a $200 Fender vs. a $200 Yamaha is no contest...Yamaha wins!!!!!!

I've never played one of those yamahas gidge...but if I see one in a music store im gonna try it. Sounds like its a real good guitar and your well pleased with it. I've seen some decent fender strats go for around 200 bucks on e-bay. I have a mex made strat and a vintage '66 strat. The mex strat doesn't play as good as the '66...(neither do the new american mades that i've tried)...but its close and the sound is ok. Overall im real pleased with the mex made strat. If both my guitars were stolen. I would probably pick up another mexican strat or a jap strat for 150 to 200 bucks on e-bay. Then eventually upgrade the pick-ups with texas specials (real pleased with those too).

are you sure you aren't talking about the yamaha 112...that's the only one i seem to find and that's what your link leads me to.

I have a US strat, my first guitar, and i think it's pretty damn good for beginner's, intermediate's and pro's. I have focused my money on alcohol and recording equipment so i haven't had the chance to buy many guitars, however i have had the chance to play alot of them by working in a guitar shop on a weekend. As a result i am gonna save up for a PRS (Paul Reed Smith) cos they are damn fine guitars :D

Anyway back to Abbott. I would recommend a fender, as even the cheaper ones are quality made, and will not let you down. I would say get a strat, wether it be a US or JAP one, you will find it cator's your needs. and you can always upgrade with new pickups etc..

The as for gidge, i have never owned a Yamaha guitar, and i dont intend to, I have never been impressed with their guitars, however i have never really had the chance to "test" one out. So i can't comment on the Yamaha Pacifica. All i can say is that i am very pleased with my strat, and haven't met a guitarist that owns a strat, say its not worth having.

I have to agree with toyL, save that extra cash and get a used fender. Have owned over 25 guitars thru the years, and the only one I have never sold (or wanted to ) is my fender jazz. Find that quality instrument and you will never put it down. That's the best for learning in this mans opinion.

I disagree about the Fender quality issue. I have an American strat, and I love it. I also have a Yamaha Pacifica 112 and it's a great guitar. However, there are no new "japanese-made strats" anymore. There are American strats, which are great (around $800), Mexican made strats, also called "Standard Strats" which are very good for the price (but closer to $400 than $200), and Korean strats, aka Squiers, which run around $200, and which I have never heard a good thing about. Having played a few, I think they're pretty much crap, and not a good way to delve into guitar playing on any level.

I had a Squier when i very first started, i loved it, although the pickups were alittle risky. But still it was a great guitar for me.
As for the price range charger has stated, me being a UK man, then i would probably agree to go for a pacifica. But only cos i am out numbered. LoL

strat

Fender Strat, any kind of Fender Strat, 100.00 or 3000.00. Go for it. You will never regret it.

I recently bought my daughter an electric guitar. I was very interested in what Gidge and others said about the Yamaha Pacifica. The problem is, we wanted to play the guitar first (I would never order a guitar through the mail). And the Yamaha Pacifica was IMPOSSIBLE to find. Not at Sam Ash or any other store on 48th Street (in NYC). Not in Guitar Center either. We ended up springing for a Standard (Mexican) Strat. Very cool for about $350. Don't buy the Squire (Korean) Strat.

If it's your second guitar, I wouldn't spend $200. You'll get a piece of shit that you'll hate unless you are extremely lucky. For $300-400 you can get a real guitar.

I agree Slim...the only thing a 200$ peice-o-shit will do for you is teach you how to deal with frustration and failure...it'll have unfixable dead spots, it won't stay in tune, the scale (fret placement) will be imprecise causing all kinds of problems, it'll have very little sustain/resonance, shitty wiring--including poor insulation and shielding--which, under certain conditions, will allow you to shock yourself really badly after playing a few hours while your trying to "crank" it up to actually "force it" to perform...oh sure, if you pussy-foot around the house and be very careful with it, you might teach yourself a few songs....but, don't be stupid enough to try to play in the "garage" with the boys, let alone gig with it.
