Knows very little
i just purchased a new guitar from a guy i work with. it is a Epiphone SG. Ilooked around and couldnt find it new, the closest thing to it is the epiphone g-400 which goes for around 300 new, they also sell a vintage modle for the same price, different finish.

i checked out the guitar and it seems to have the same specs as the g-400.
only real difference is on the head it says "SG", the g-400's dont say that. i picked it up for $250, it was 400 when he bought it new. they thing is in mint condition, hardly ever played, and i know the guy, it was really hardly played.

was this a good deal? or should i just give it back being as i didnt pay him yet?

i do like it, but i have to use it to its full potential. i was just messing aropund with it and its cool, only i really bought it for distortion, and i dont have a good amp for that. roght now i was using my fender acoustasonic jr 40w combo, and obviously there is no distortion on it. the clean on the guitar through this amp are ok, but not at all ideal, i have played a standard tele on this amp and it sounds great, this ep just doesnt stand up. i was thing of maybe keeping it and buying a different amp for an electric set-up, i do not want to run a distortion pedal into this amp.

when i get a tele i can use that for the fender amp i already have, and the sg could be for higher gain sounds.

i have an ibanez starter electric i picked up from this guy too, and to be honest the clean sound better on that then on the ep.

i dont know, i dont know if i should keep it and hope it sounds good later when i get a better amp for it, or just forget and buy a new tele and use it for good cleans with the set up i already have.

ultimately i want both, but right now i have kind of a dilema

I once worked in a mom-and-pop music store and they were an authorized Gibson dealer. They had a bunch of Epiphones that I would play, but the one I always came back to was the SG. I regret not buying that guitar when the store finally closed down for good.

You are asking people you don't to give their opinions of a guitar they've never seen. If you like it, it plays well, and you can afford it, keep it.

does it have open coil humbuckers or alnico humbuckers...meaning is it an SG "special" (which will have open coil) or an SG, because there is a model of G-400 that has SG on the headstock - the SG Deluxe.
In any case play it a bit... does it stay in tune... does it feel nice...
if you like it...then keep it, pay the guy and make music

it is gone.

i liked it, but if i were to keep it i would have to buy another amp to due what i want with it.

im just going to get a tele for now to use its clean tone and use it with my current amp setup.

down the road ill get a new another amp, and then just buy a brand new epiphone g 400 vintage for about the smae price as the one i was going to buy, plus i didnt like the color of the one i had(not that it matters much).

thanks for responding everyone
