New guitar, heres a picture of my new Epiphone Les Paul Standard with the Plus top-it has some nice figuring in that maple top. I checked other music stores around the area and this one had all the features, played and sounded great, looked great and was quite a bit lighter than about a dozen other LPs that I tried out.
Checked it out last night at a loud jam session through a Peavey Delta Blues tube amp I also recently acquired-basically a Classic 30 amp with 15" spkr and tremolo-and it totally rocked out! They are a great combo.:D

Sweet! :) Nice-looking guitar.

Thanks, it is a great guitar. I saw it in the music store several months ago and had figured it was long since sold. When it was still there a few weeks ago I knew it was going to follow me home-there was no use in trying to fight it...
It has that nice ballsy Les Paul sound that my Gibson 'the Paul' doesn't quite have. Does you're les Paul Special have that LP tone-I remember it doesn't have the maple cap on the top-same as the Paul?

Congrats on your very nice axe. Epi makes some terrific affordable guitars, which are true to the LP design and style.

To my ears it does - remember that I have one P-90 at the neck and a DiMarzio SD at the bridge, so it's not your regular LP in terms of pickup configuration.

You're correct that it doesn't have a maple cap, just a big fat piece of non-weight-relieved mahogany, but it's a piece of wood that sings nicely.

Ok, my Paul is made from Black Walnut-it must be Walnut vs. Mahogany as the tonewood. Must have been an experiment during the Norlin era. My Paul has a DiMarzio PAF Classic in the bridge as well-so it must be the wood...

gorgeous guitar. i'm a retard on matching guitars and amps, no conissuer, but yeah...when they mesh it's a great thing.:)

Man, that amp sounds super with a Strat as well-it's that 15" spkr in there and some nice headroom the tubes give it. The in between tones thru the amp are super sweet!:D

I don't know if it was a Norlin thing either but in genral, Walnut makes a good instrument and I like it a lot. There is more than one type commonly used. American Black, European, Claro. As a rule they are all quite dark sounding and not as "crisp" as mahogany but have quite a rich mellow sustain. It is as heavy as rule if not heavier than mahogany, does depend a lot on species and piece though.. I've just bought a ton and a half or the stuff, European and beautifully flamed with some fantastic grain. I've also got an option of some reslly nice Claro in big sizes that I'm holding fire on because it's pretty expensive. You see in my case it's timber that follows me home, I'll give in to it eventually.

Anyway Walnut is nice to work with sounds good and better get popular real soon.

You don't happen to know if and what type of walnut, American Black possibly, you have and on what exactly is the model? Cheers in advance.

Here is a taste of the stuff I bought, I was deeping it into sets last week thats off the saw and the figure justs jumps at yer. Enough for a good few instruments.

Nice looking log of walnut!

I have a 1978 catalogue somewhere around here with all of the specs that is hiding from me right now, it definitely is a walnut body and neck with a build date of August 16th 1977 penciled in the control cavity. The neck and body specs match the Les Paul Standard though the body is thinner-here is one for sale on EBay though I have painted the body on mine-see picture below.

Are you saying you painted a walnut-body LP?

If you are, I might just drive over there right now to slap some sense into you. You will be forever banished to live on an island with Zaphod B.

Right, and together Anfontan and I will create the "Republic Of Guitarists With The Balls To Make Their Guitars The Way They Like Them," or ROGWTBTMTGTWTLT for short. :D

The body was well worn with some deep gouges in it so it was definitely an improvement with the paint! Hope the Flu bug lets loose of you-that has been going around everywhere these days!
