The switch on the pickguard would be broken off about 10 minutes after I picked it up. What is it for, and why did it get put there, of all places?

Replacing the switch with an eXacto blade

I already have a push/pull on the tone pot to go from Series to parallel. I didn't have a 250k push/pull pot for volume so I floated that toggle switch to split the humbucker. So far it's not in my way. Played it in a band setting today. I love the guitar but that bridge is headed for the door.
