New drums

I have to ask what Pokkies are when translated form your vernacular?
The opening riff brough Free to mind.
I love the proggy bass growl.
I like the whole package.

The problems I noted earlier seem to be compounded with music in the mix. It really seems to be leaning to the right now. Maybe you want it that way? I don't know. The kick sounds good, but the snare and toms sound thin. The cymbals and hats sound small. I dunno, with the style of the guitars and bass, I'm thinking something like this needs much fatter drums. These sounds are too tight and poppy. I'm thinking something like this needs something like the drums on Back in Black.

I quite like the clarity of the bass and drums, but they don't quite gel with the fuzz on the guitar in my ears.

Given you are into drums (so I assume they are where you want them) I would suggest aiming for more clarity on the guitar.

Thanks Ray! Good ear on the Free thing. I was thinking of a couple tunes with that riff and tone--Alright Now was one of the two!

And pokies are cops! I do a bit of home brew and my son wants to expand it to include hard liquor!

Thanks for the input! I am "into" drums, but I'm a guitarist, trying to nail a good drum sound before I dive into a big recording project. I'm gonna play with this a bit more today, maybe retrack and clean up the guitars some. Thanks again!

Note to self: stop mixing and posting this crap at 3:00 am! As soon as I cranked it up this morning I heard exactly what you were talking about.

And Back in Black drums? Those are my holy grail. Seriously, believe it or not, that's what I'm trying to get to. I probably need to step back and focus more on the kit to get there. I know my snare's too high to match it, and I didn't capture enough "boom" on the kick.

For now I'll work with what I have (since the drummer's not here!) and fix the balance issues and see what I end up with. Thanks for the listen and the input!

Yup, that snare sound is nowhere near Back in Black. Looser tuning, holmes.

Yep, i hear ya. My drummer likes a bright snap, and that's cool for a lot of stuff---but I need to tune this thing down and try again for the big rock sound I'm going for.

Yeah, or build your snare collection as time goes by. I've got 4, and they all sound different. You can steal a used Ludwig Supraphonic off ebay and get that Back in Black sound no problemo. :)

I've actually got two now...both the same size and material, but I could tune of 'em down. And yeah, I've checked out those Supraphonics. That'll prolly be my next acquisition.

I got a Supra while back, and it's pretty much the only snare I use now. It'll do damn near anything.

If you have two similar snares, try going way different on the heads and tuning. Go single-ply batter on one, and double on the other. Make one resonant and one dead.

That snare sounds like it is tuned tighter than a nats ass. I would loosen the batter head a bit. It sounds like a piccolo snare, or a marching snare. The other tones are so thick and rich that thing sticks out like a sore thumb. It needs big tubby sounding snare hits, not that uber tight choked off sound. Other than that it sounds real nice i think.

Personally I wasn't too crazy about the kick either. Too much highs in the verb on it. Sounds kinda hollow.

Pokies down this way is slang for poker machines or, I think you may refer to them as, slot machines. Hence my confusion!

Well with your definition of pokies, my son's comment makes no sense at all, now does it? :D

Okay...so I went out of town for a couple days and let this sit. But I did throw it on a disc to listen to in my car while I drove for hours (no I didn't listen to this for hours, I just drove for hours). Besides the specific comments from you guys, I noticed that the whole think was too drum and bass heavy--it was killing me in my car. (I need to adjust my monitor setup in my studio, as that's proving to be a common problem with my mixes).

Anyway, here's a tweaked mix. The guits are retracked--less gain, more articulation. The drums aren't retracked, but they are adjusted in many ways. The snare is no longer tighter than a gnat's ass (though it might still be as snug as a virgin's...well, you get the point). Also, the kick should sound better (you were right about that verb Murdersgalore).

I have yet to take this to the car to compare, but now of course, it feels guitar heavy to me. I'd love it if some of you guys could crank it up on your systems and tell me if that's the case, or if it's more balanced. And for the love of Pete, I hope it's no longer heavy on the right side--please tell me if it still is and I'll make a Dr. appointment.

Again, thanks for the all the input. I'm writing for a major project (no, this isn't part of it; this is just some noodling) and I really wanna nail the drum sound before I start recording.

One more thing--this mix is a bit longer, and without vox or a lead, it can seem a bit redundant. If you get bored, jump ahead and sample it--there are different sections in terms of dynamics. I was trying to cover a couple bases.

Thanks,

WS

i listened to the newly revised version. The drums sound better, but if it were my mix i would try and possibly hype some of the highs to get a touch more click in the bass drum, not alot but just enough to get it to poke through a little more. Just needs a bit more smack. The bass now seems like it either needs a little more snarl to stand out, or maybe just a nut-hair of a boost. Guitars are a little dominant in this mix. I would take them down, ever so slightly...this could change my impressions on the bass level...so keep your ears open. Also again this is more of a preference thing, but i would take down the hats just a smidgeon. There is a splash that hits kinda hard on the old ear drums as well, i would remedy that in your final mixes. Overall i think you have some really nice lush tones, just getting them all to play nice with each other is the trick.

Guitars down slightly
Bass Drum...more smack, click...a little
Bass guitars up a hair
Make the splashes easier on the ears...and you are golden
