Hey guys, I am going to be getting a new drumset around the $1000 range. So far i am definately leaning toward the Tama Superstar SL Custom http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Tama-Superstar-SL-Custom-5Piece-Standard-Drum-Set?sku=449210
or a pearl export 6 Piece http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Pearl-Export-EX-5Piece-Drum-Set-with-Free-10-Tom?sku=447874.

I've played both, and like both. My friend has the Pearl and sdays he can't stand the Tom mounts, but they dont seem to bother me.I play Thrash metal and other forms of Rock. This will be the set I use to record my tracks. The set i am using now is good, but this will be the upgrade. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Flame

Check out the gretsch Catalina Series, they are amazing for the price. A good friend of mine who has been drumming for 40 years plays on a set of Pearl Masterowkrs and says they sound as good as his masterworks have ever sounded.

tama tama tama tama tama

I think I made my point

I loathe Pearl unless it's top of the range. The budget to mid kits suck IMHO if you want a good pearl break the bank & take out a loan & rob your gran

so once more

tama tama tama tama tama

No. Not really. Catalinas are great sets for the money. Another vote for gretsch.

I have to vote Tama myself. My first kit was a Pearl and I too hate those miserable awful elbow mounts. Nothing like a ball and socet moungt and getting it over with rather than screwing with those clunky things. I also think the Tama are just a better built better bang for the buck. Their Rockstar or equivalents are a great values IMO. It isn't so much the big things that make me dislike Pearl, but a zillion little things like the mounts that over time wear on your nerves. I find Tama to just make well thought out and durable stuff in general. Yamaha makes some great stuff too.

I'd definitely pick the Superstars over the Pearls. I've owned 2 Pearl kits and ditched them both, I could never position the toms the way I wanted with that hardware.

If you're looking to drop up to $1000, don't forget PDP, or the lower level Sonors. Not sure if those are up your alley, but of all the "semi-pro" kits I've seen the Sonor Force 2005 and 3005 kits are the ones I'd personally look at if I was getting a new kit. Sound phenominal, great hardware. But the Tamas are definitely excellent drums as well, you won't go wrong with those.

Ey guys i forgot, For around the price range i am looking for, yamaha has a nice kit. Any body have any experience on these, how's the quality?http://www.musiciansfriend.com/prod...on-Drum-Set-with-Free-16-Floor-Tom?sku=445690
The only thing tha is bugging me about the pearl is that its a five piece, i want three rack toms if possible. I am gonna try to bargian with the music shop guy to see if ic an get some kind of deal. So its between the Tama and and the Yamaha fusion. I am playing thrash so i want that Vinnie Paul/Pantera sound or Nick Menza/Megadeth sound, so i think the tama might work. I am still not sure.

Hey dude,
All of these kits are fine for the money.
I happen to like the Pearl tom mounts and holders the best. Very few ball/socket style holders are strong enough to hold my rack toms in place. Mapex, Tama, Premier ball/socket L-arms always tend to slip until the toms are touching the bass drum!

The exception is the Yamaha ball/socket system which is much better, but I've found the Yess mounts often come loose and you need to take one of the heads off to tighten it up again.

I've never had any problems with Pearl tom arms which are rock solid and perfect for hard hitters. The optimounts or ISS mounts are great too. You just need to know how to position the tom holders to get them in the right place.

I've used all of these kits in studios / at gigs / or at home and I'd go for the Pearl.
Check this one out! http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Pearl-Export-8Piece-Double-Bass-Drum-Set?sku=447878

I would go with the Sonor 3005. Or the Mapex Pro M.

The more I hear the PDP Kits that DW makes the more I want one..... The really sound Amazing... and for the Price, They Cant Be Beat!!!!! They are the same shells as the DW Drums but they aren't "Hand Made" soo the price is WAY different! I have been seeing quite a few National Touring Bands with a PDP Kit..........

cool guys thanx. Ya i was looking at this, is this the M, http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Mapex-M-Birch-6Piece-Drum-Set-with-Free-8-Tom?sku=449727
like i said, i like the fact of having more toms, but i want quality sound, its going to be used mainly for recording.I will be doing all styles, but mainly thrash metal. Will this set be good for that? Right now i am between this set, a tama superstar sl, and a maybe a pearl export 6 peice, but i think the mapex rules the last one out. thanx

Hi everybody, newbie here.

My first kit was a Tama Superstar, mid-eighties version. The new Superstars are quite good, I've done some research on these. Modern Drummer gave them rave reviews also. I just received an e-mail today from Music123 and they have probably the best deal on Tama Superstar kits I've seen...some kind of outlet/blowout/closeout deal they have going on for the month of July. They have a five piece kit for about $700 bucks. I really like the die cast rims-makes tuning a breeze. Well, there's my 2 cents! Nice to meet you all.

I highly suggest staying away from the pearl, go with a company like Mapex or Sonor who actually puts good wood in their intermediate sets.
