Just put this desk together. I really like the way it looks. Damn thing ways about 200 pounds too. I'll be dropping down the computer monitor shelf in the middle to get a better view of the live room. Can't wait to build in my racks underneath. If anyone's interested I got it at Office Max (made by Sullivan) for about $139. It came with a nice "hutch" type shelving unit that mounts on a desk wing but it won't be put there. I'll probably put it beside the couch for books, etc.

Another pic. The mix position is 4 feet from where I'll place the near field monitors so they'll be spaced 4 feet from each other. That's why I like the swept back "wings." Gives me room to place the monitors properly.

Oops. Forgot the pic.

Last pic I promise. Of course this one and the last one was taken on a step ladder to give a better view of the desk surface.

Looks great Don!
$139 huh?
I'd pay that for the top alone!

Suweeet...that's cheap as hell!

How's the construction? Will it need to be reinforced at all?

Nice work don - $139?? is it polystyrene with stick on paper wood veneer?? ;);)

cheers

John - not quite foam :D but it is MDF. I think that's what they call that stuff. All I know is it's heavy.

Jake - It's much sturdier than I expected. It uses metal "cam locks" with universal joint looking bolts. I don't plan on anything heavy on the desk surface - everything will be underneath in self-surporting racks. The instructions gave the load rating. I'll take a look at it tonight. Here's a link for more info. Oh yeah, it was $149 not $139. http://www.officemax.com/max/soluti...es&expansionOID=-536879593&prodBlockOID=52696

I have tons of things on the desk, including a 20pound Oberheim OB12 and other stuff. Its very stable and a great deal for 140 buxx.

Giganova,

Since you clearly do not appreciate your OB12 (its crooked) you no longer have the right to keep it.

Please ship it to Midimonkey Productions, Colonia, NJ, where it will be properly treated.

:D

At least Don now knows the desk he purchased can handle some serious weight. Looking good!

LOL frederic -- I can't send you the OB12 coz its in constant use, despite the crappy presets everyone is complaining about. I even forgot where the on/off switch is. Its the heaviest MIDI controller money can buy. Also, I couldn't afford the shipping costs due to its weight  The desk itself can even handle me playing on the OB12!

Ship it freight collect :D

Sorry, I miss mine :(

Anyway, just joshing ya.

Giganova - I want those damn LCD monitors!!!! I'll be using two 17" CRT monitors and they're so damn big. Hell I might have to drop the monitor pedestal down so I can see what's going on through the window. I hope to be able to pick up a couple of 15" LCD's (maybe for Christmas) but right now I have to spend $560 on tempered glass. I'll be using 5/8" on the live room side (3'x4' and 3'x3') and 1/2" (3'x4' and 3'x3') on the control room and vocal booth side.

Oh yeah, I just put the couch in the control room too. It's been sitting in my living room since about February. The house is slowly starting to look like a home again :D

Prices for black cased 15" LCD monitors (1024x768) typically are about $200-$300 US depending if its new, used, refurbished, etc.

Just a thought...

I'm going to be doing the same, actually. I have two Mag 19" tube monitors that display stunningly and beautifully, but they are soooooo deep it may be a problem in the new configuration.

Though, I don't want to give up my 3200x1200 dual monitor desktop (1600x1200 LCD's are just soooooooo expensive, even used).

Yeah I read in a computer trade mag yesterday that 15" LCD's have more or less stabilized for the next quarter but to expect the 17" to drop somewhat. Probably only about $20 though.

When you decide on your LCD's, try to get something in the 250-350nit range (brightness). The contrast between light and dark is better, and you're eyes get tired less. Some of the older monitors are 100-150 nits and your eyes get tired.

Also the newer displays, refresh faster, thus you can play FPS games on them.

LCD monitors are really cool. I was very happy when I got mine 2 months ago for $320 each at Circuit City (they were on sale "out of production model" coz the newer model has bigger built-in speakers. Apart from that, they were identical). At first I had very exensive Sony monitors, but they were flickering, so I got the cheaper ProView 17" models.

Hey Don -- I like the color scheme of your studio -- it looks damn cool! When do you think you'll be finished and can fire up your gear for the first time? How many rooms do you have? Could you post a floor plan?

I told my son's band I'd be ready to record in 2 weeks. I'll still have a lot of tweaking to do (diffusion, absorption, bass traps, etc) but they need a demo real quick for club work. We'll see.

I'm no artist (or CAD pro) but here's a simple rough stick drawing of the layout. Nothing is to scale. I just whipped it up 5 minutes ago in Paint. Total size is 1200 sq ft. All interior walls are staggered stud. All walls use resilient channel, lots of insulation and 5/8" sheetrock.
