New computer...help me set it up

Ok my old computer got fried and was a POS so I went and got a new computer with 2.6G 533FSB 1G ram, 80G 7200RPM HD CD-R and CD-rom, running win XP, I basically got it striped cause I'm not doing ANYTHING but recording with this computer, I still want to be able to get online to check forums from time to time, but nothing else other than recording is going on this computer. I have a delta 1010 and Cubase VST, I'm doing mainly audio, but am trying to integrate midi into it at some point. Would you set it up any differently other than just optimizing windows XP for performance? I haven't even set the computer up yet, so let me know what to do, what to disable what to get rid of, and basically how to get the most out of what I have. Also should I get some sort of controler for my Cubase?? What's a good one? I need a new mixer cause mine is noisy and has a built in amp for live, so it's not the best for recording. Should I get a controler/mixer and just get some ok preamps or just not get the controler and get a makie for my preamps?? Thanks, and please don't hesitate to ask questions if there's anything you need clarified, and if this has been answered please post some links, cause the search engine here is so slow it's frustrating.

I would buy a $100.00 POS laptop for the internet and never ever hook up your DAW to the internet.....


But I aint' you.....

You could also partion the drive.....
one portion for whatever and one dedicated to recording...

first things first

you need a good clean signal path. this means
1. good mics check out CAD, 421, 441 etc
2. a good sound card eg : audiophile for stereo or a delta or more expensive an rme with multi inputs
3. decent preamps eg: vtb1 or dmp3 or maybe do what i do and build your own preamps.
i would suggest two drives on your pc. one for xp and your cubase application and the other drive for your audio tracks.
drop the partitioning idea. its fools gold.

I was actually refering to the computer, I have anotherone I could use for the internet, but would like to use this one as well.....I shouldn't do that? What will that save me? As far as the signal path, in my post I stated that I have a delta 1010 for a sound card, and I have plenty of mics, I already have had this setup on my old computer, but it was my everything computer, and since this one is a recording ONLY computer I thought I could set it up differently and really show it's potential.
