It's Too Funky in Here!!!
I got an email from my favorite media supplier that there are new Type II cassettes just released by a name brand company. Not sure if this is really a new product or a batch of NOS, but no difference to me. The main difference is NOS supplies run out, and current products should hopefully be around a lot longer. I plan on getting a few dozen if/when my finances allow. However, they are affordable and less than the next available name brand.

PM me and I'll send you the link. I don't want to broadcast it ATM.:spank::eek:;)

I just ordered...

I just ordered 50, (5 boxes of 10)!

I've not recorded much lately, but I've not given up!

Thanks Dave!

You're welcome!;):spank:

Sounds cool, but I have several NOS Type II cassettes I have not used, yet.

@ Dave

Thanx for the post Dave!!!
Much appreciated!

Dave, thanks for the post and good to see you back again but... seriously... enough with the buying / collecting already. It will only cause problems. You have more than enough. Much love.

I'm buying media but i'm not collecting. The day will come when I will start to sell some stuff off. Thx ;)

Yeah I was going to say the same thing, don't you already have like 100 unused unopened type 2 cassette tapes or something like that?

Thanks for the info Dave... much appreciated. :)

Chilljam, I think it's probably more like 1000 that Dave has. LOL  :D I'm not sure really. :p

Heck, I have around 100 unopened high bias... Maxell and TDK mostly, and I'm always looking for deals though. There's tons of new and NOS tape out there, but people just want too much for it, so it's nice to find bargains. Gone are the days when we could run to the corner store and grab a 5-pack of Maxell XLII for $7.99 USD. Doesn't seem that long ago. Well, I guess it wasn't really. I was still seeing XLII 90 on the shelf at Walmart just a few years ago... 2005, maybe later even. Haven't seen the 60-minute at the local stores for longer than that though. So now it's a whole new ballgame. We have to stock up. :( Oh well, at least it's out there. ;)

Hey, and don't forget to give Dave some good rep for this by clicking on the star at the bottom left of his post. He's like me... he doesn't ask for it, but he sure does deserve some appreciation for all the helpful info shared over the years, including stuff like this. I tried to give him some, but it said I have to spread it around. :(

Hello,... and yes. It could be 1500 by now, or more.

My friends, I have been the worst example of what you're talking about in gear hoarding, compulsive spending, etc. In short, I was a gear slut for no other reason than it's great shit I got mostly for deals and I could afford it. However, those days are gone and I have my legacy to deal with and unravel a fair amount to accommodate my present lifestyle. In short, it's way too late to save me from myself, but thanks for the thought.

In media,... tho' my recorded output has dwindled down to next to nothing, I feel a consummable media is still a good investment, it gives me options, and it future proofs my investment in this hobby. I'll never be a rock star, but it's fun nonetheless.

Type II cassettes are a little hard to find these days, and I say get it now while the getting is good. If I could afford a case or pallet, I'd get it. Funny thing is the tape based recording still works great for me, and I'm sticking with it. When you have as many recorders as I do, there's sound reasoning (hah: pun) to try & not hit a wall on the issue of media. I've always been into media of all sorts, and there's no stopping now. The real joy is in the creating, producing and listening back of the music itself. Sometimes I'm astounded that some of the stuff I did 25 years ago still sounds good to me, and has held up well in the test of time. I'm neck deep in tape technology and media. That's my legacy. My kids and those recordings. YMMV. My oldest son reminds me almost daily that everything I have is obsolete. I'm just the obsolete media guy, you could say.

When media supplies come up like this, of course I'm in. You?

It may sound a bit cracked, but I'm still looking to get my Beta Hifi fixed some day.;):spank:

50 new tapes delivered!

How sweet it is!
tapes 1.webp

A couple quick asides,...

- Last major gear purchase: Apr 2008, Tascam DP02cf (all digital/no tape required!) I'm seriously reformed off that gear buying binge that started in Y2K!

- I continue to pick up used cassette tapes of all sorts at thrift stores for 50c - 99c a piece! Often times I like to listen to what the previous owner had recorded before I record over them. It's a source of amusement sometimes. I also pick up many used prerecorded tapes of my favorite albums.

- Type 1 tapes I find usually end up as "rock mix" tapes recorded off my 600 CD changer, which are most useful for the car. Type 2 tapes I find I generally reserve for multitracking.

Life is good! Carry on!;):spank:

Hey Dave,
Have you tried out those Polaroids yet?
What's the verdict on the frequencies? How do they stand up?
Highs, Mids, & Lows?
What other type II tape would you compare them to?
Do they have that "boomy low end" sound that most of the "CD-IT" type tapes have?

I was afraid that the new type II would be those Polaroids. Mostly been thumbs down from those who've tried them.

I don't have any testing or results yet. Will try them later.

Why would people give the thumbs down to these cassettes?

It looks like TDK SA-90's are still available, if you want to go that way instead.;):spank:

One of the members of Tapeheads.net bought some of the new Polaroid Type II and was not impressed. It seems as if this tape is a repackaging of some off name type II using the Polaroid name through the holding company that owns the Polaroid name. However great new Type II tapes can be had through National Audio Company (NAC). I've some of their Cobalt Type II and its first class tape.

The NAC branded tape is also a crafty entrepenuer who buys NOS pancakes of name brand cassette tape from out of business cassette houses and puts in in shells himself. I see virtually no difference between the both tapes referenced in your post, as you've described. As for quality of the Polaroids, I'll have to defer judgment atm. Thanks
