I get it. I'll bet you were cussing, weren't ya?

The trick to avoiding that kind of chipping is to have a back-up board tight up against the piece you're drilling through. That advice is kind of late, though!

Yeah, I remembered that after I did it, but it's been a long time since I did any woodworking. It would've been cooler to jig it up in a Bridgeport and crank up the speed and put the holes exactly where they should go.

Regardless, it will be a very cool axe when you're done with it.

I'm sure you know that you've killed any resale value. :D

I don't know, it ought to be worth $100 as is, and if I parted it out on eBay, probably even more.

If you like that one, try a Squire 51. They are great guitars to mod and for $149 new you can't go wrong. I love mine and play it more than my other guitars. Here is one I just did a pickguard for recently:

Really nice guitars once you dial them in....

I was looking at them a while back. They are pretty cool. Unfortunately, when i played all 3 they had at GC, the only one that played worth a damn was the black one, which I didn't like. The fender forum has area51 which is for this guitar and here is another forum with some info about hot ridding them: http://www.instituteofnoise.com/squier51/forum/

I ended up buying a squier mini and a $75 MIC strat bullet. the strat bullet is the same dimensions as a regular strat (not thin body). i filled and drilled to put a fender bridge on it and new tuners. I also bought a 2 humbucker pre-wired pickguard from guitar fetish, since the squier had the bathtub routing.

After setting it up, I like it better than my jambolin or 62 RI that I've had for 15 years. It has a huge neck and has really good sustain for some reason. The body is really heavy.

I just find it so liberating to hack on a strat knock-off. I had my fender strat for years before I tried to do anything to it, and even then, i was very careful to be able to return it to its original state. Now the thing is so beat up, it gets relic points.

Yeah, I checked the area51. Most who own all 3 colors swear the sunburst is the best?? Not sure how they know this, but that was the opinion of a few members. Perhaps the better wood is used on the suburst models? In any event I bought a sunburst and love the little bastard!! I did drop a SD JB in just to give it more balls...

Maybe the wood is better since some of it shows through the finish.

Cool looking guitar, and ripe for mods.

"There were issues with high and low frets buzzing out certain positions so I started raising the action until that cleared up"

Sounds like the perfect opportunity to try your hand at fret dressing.

Actually, the frets were pretty good. The nut was cut very poorly.

I suppose you'll think this is a silly question, but I'm assuming that the holes didn't line up on the pickguard, but did the assembly you put in need any modification at all? I mean, the pickguard was exactly the same size even though it's a Squier Bullet?
