I think the AES needs to establish the Neutrix connectors (XLR AND TRS in one) as a standard for all audio gear. Anyone else agree out there? I mean, can you think of a downside to these? I just find it stupid that on things like the 002 Rack unit I'm only allowed 4 XLR inputs and the other 4 are TRS inputs. So in order for me to utilize those as mic inputs I have to either make/buy a cable to adapt XLR to TRS or buy an adapter to put the back of it. I mean, even the cheapo-Mbox has Neutrix!!!! I can't think that it would be that much more expensive for companies to add these to their units. Comments?

I'd actually prefer everything have solder points or barrier strips (which I solder anyways) because they are cheaper and generally more reliable if you can solder better than a chimp or your typical home recorder.

Um......... we are in a wartime economy.

Everybody has to make sacrifices.

That's a good idea until you need phantom power and there's no individual switch for each channel.

And your 48-point patchbay just became 3 rack spaces instead of one.

And on and on and on................

The reason you only have four XLR's on that unit is that there are only four preamps. They could've put eight in, but the price would've gone up considerably I'm sure...

Yeah, I agree with you guys...but still...i think they should give us everything for cheap! But that's my perfect world.

Can any of you recommend a good pre for those pesky extra inputs that will need them? I should just be able to run a mic through a good pre and then into the TRS +4 inputs of 5 through 8 right? (haven't bought it yet, that's why I'm asking)

The line inputs aren't going to help - You'll need a preamp.

There are so many out there... I wouldn't even know where to start. Maybe search "The Rack" threads.

No, i know MM...that's what i was talking about. I just get a pre amp, and then plug the outputs of it into the +4 TRS jacks. There won't be any problems plugging the preamp into the line inputs will there?

No there shouldn't be any problems. You might have to buy XLR to TRS leads is all. Piece of advice: Don;t be suckered into the cheap Behringer Tube Pres. THEY ARE CRAP!
Alternatively you could buy a desk with mic pres and direct outs. It might be cheaper and give yuo decent results
