Neumann or Audio technica??

I was gonna buy an M147 once.

A few people here talked me out of it though. It was sometime ago, and I think the comments that swayed me not to, were things like "overly-colored" and/or "un-natural"?

I'm not telling you not to buy it or anything, hard to go wrong with a Neuman, and I'm sure it would work well in some situations.

If there's any way for you to audition both mics, do it. Then make your decision based on what you hear, and not what you've heard.

I am very interested in the outcome. What did you decide and why?

so far i'm going with the 4060.. b/c i've use it.. its an awesome mic.. i got to do a quick test on both mics.. and the m147's distorts easy...
it sounded good but was missing something, the 4060 sounded great it had a full rich sound to it..the lows were a little to thick, but hey it doesn't have a low pass, but i can fix that with EQ...

these are the 2 mics i'm thinking about, but if you know something else around the same price rage pls tell me so i can hit some ppl up and see if they have 1... if not i'm gonna be able to get a 4060 for $799 with out the PSU... the price was $699, but now he jumped up $100...
i should be able to get the PSU from AT

I would go on the 4060.
they are both great mics but I found the m147 a bit midi and not as warm or sparkly as you would expect (it is defenetly not the cardioid version of the m149 and its pattern is closer to hyper-cardioid than cardioid anyway).
the 4060 is there for also much better all-rounder.

You can get a 4060 new from 8th street for 900 with power supply and warranty. I'd never buy a used mic missing a crucial component. First of all what happened to the power supply (is the mic hot) and second how do you know that it will work. A new one is only a few bones more........

someone just brought to my attention:
AKG 414/uls
SP T3

i know the 414's can compare to just about any vocal mic, and i know the T3 is nice but is it in the same class as the 414 or 4060?

Isn't there a large price difference between a Neuman M147 and the 4060. I was under the impression that the M147 was close to $1,500.00 or maybe more.

Just for information sake, I read an article about a couple of mics you might want to look into. One was a CAD (350?) or (3500) or something like that for the model number. I will check again and post the correct model number. Anyway, this mic got a great review.

Also, CAD makes one called an M9 that is a tube condenser, also got high marks.

Another one was the SE Electronics SE 500 and SE 5500. Both tube condensers, both got high marks.

The nice thing about the SE is it looks like an AKG C12VR.

I just checked, the Neuman M147 lists for $1,999.00 at Sweetwater. The AT 4060 lists for $1695.00. Seems like the AT is agressively discounted whereas I do not now if the Neuman is so agressively discounted.

The AT 40 series seem to get pretty good kudos but hey, I always assume that reviews are biased for one unknwon reason or another. So, in the end, unless YOU like the sound, nothing else matters.

Just for curiosity sake, why not save a bit more and obtain a Neuman U87. After all, isn't this the standard by which all others are measured.

J.W.
