Back in the day you could network two boxes with Direct Cable Connection. Is that still doable? I have two XP machines - nearly identical specs. One was my live recording rig and the other in the studio. I'm not gigging right now and thought I'd use one for backups and web stuff. I'm thinking direct cable with USB or Firewire. I can get a router/hub if need be but if I don't need to...

also consider that you wont need a router/hub if you use an ethernet crossover cable, enable 'file and printer sharing' on both boxes and make them members of the same workgroup

I was thinking just this. You'll also want to establish "Shared" for any drives you want seen by both computers. You can buy or make that crossover cable (well, I can since I have the tools and bulk cabling), and I was told I can use such a cable to connect my old HP4+ printer to a laptop, just one of my many projects. Those cables shouldn't be terribly expensive. They are just a regular ethernet cable with a different connection to the internal wires at the plug end.
