my recorder only has 2 xlr inputs(bummer) so i a'm going to need a sub-mixer. i will need a mixer with direct outs for each channel so i can plug the mixer's channel right in to the recorders channel.

it has to be 8 channels. i have a buget of $400

any ideas?

you see, i record my drums direct. which in short...i record each drum to it's own track so, i can have more control over the volumes and eq and effects. it i plug 8 mics into the mixer and plug the mixer into channels 1 and 2, when i record i will only have two tracks and those two tracks will be filled with drums that i will have no control over. i found a 6-channel bord that was made by makie. i understand that they has good pre-amps. is that true?

hey! i just checked out the carven mixer. looks pretty sweet! i did not say if it had direct outs...can the inserts be used as a direct out? the price is also pretty sweet! ($279) do you think that i shoud pass0up the makie ($389) and buy the carven mixer?

(tip=send ring=return sleeve=cold)

Yes you can use inserts as a direct out.

First, a 2 conductor wire, a 3 conductor 1/4" plug, and a 2 conductor 1/4" plug. The 3 cond. will be called plug A, and the other plug B.

On plug A, wire the the red, (or white) wire to the tip, and the cold wire to the sleeve of plug A. Then get a small piece of wire, and put it across the tip and the ring, (so the signal will also go back into the mixer).

Then on plug B, just wire hot to the tip, and the cold to the sleeve. Make sure you plug, plug A into the insert, or it won't work. And I don't think they sell this cable in stores so you'll have to solder it yourself.

Tyler's solution is certainly more permanent and robust, but if you are too lazy to do all that, simply plug a TRS plug all the way into the insert jack, then pull it back out to the first "click". That will give you a workable solution.

i'll look at these. i was really looking at the mackie board. it's a 6-channel,but i have 2 other xlrs on my recorder so i was looking at that one. plus it's in my price range. are mackie pre-amps good?

You can check out the manual for this at http://www.carvin.com/manuals.html . And yes, you can. From the SM162 manual :
--------------------------------------
Another use for the insert jack is as a direct output. To achieve this function, insert a mono 1/4” plug into the first click of the jack. The result is a direct output signal from the channel that does not disturb the channels operation. A common use for the insert direct out is in multi track-ing, when individual channels are recorded to separate tracks on a multitrack recorder.

I kind of like this and the C44 series. Anyone have good/bad experiences with Carvin products?

yeah! i like the carven mixers. so i guess it's down to carven and mackie.

let's go over the evidence....

#1 carven has great prices on there mixers.

#2 mackie is a huge recording/live brand name

#3 carven mixers have what i want for a good price

#4 so does mackie.

i still think there both good mixers. i have an idea.....

if you where going to by a (makie/carven) mixer why whould you buy it?

i really think that it's the mackie but i'm not sure.

Alesis Studio 24 @ $349 also has direct outs.

How does Carvin compare with Behringer/Mackie/Soundcraft?

I *would* need a 24 channel mixer. The 16-channel Boss mixer I'm using now is really getting to small. And I would only need it until I get budget enough to buy a Yamaha 2416 (in ten years or so :) )

That 24 channel Carvin looks good on paper. :p

You'll get the best comparison between Behringer/Mackie/Soundcraft if you read about all the three on their web sites....if everyone tries to give you their opinion you'll end up with a few diferent opinions for each product....best is to research for your self I reckon...those were just recomendations...good luck man!!
I hope you get the one that kicks ass.... :)

New M-Series

I have recently purchased a mixer for the same reasons.

Iwas actually trying to get a mic but stumbled upon the new soundcraft M8 mixer really really cheap-£270!

Its great really robust and it was soooo cheap. From www.studiospares.co.uk
