Unpossible!
Hey - what is the easiest and least expensive way to upload sound clips (from a sub drop, to a few minute intro) and then be able to trigger them? Preferably with a footswitch.

Thanks in advance!

Ableton Live is a great tool, but not cheap, and then you need the foot pedal.

You could simply load files into an IPod, but no footswitch option.
Some looper pedals allow for storing several banks at a time.
Maybe a software sampler would store enough info in a cell to be triggered by a keystroke.
Just throwing out ideas.

Questions

Tell us what equipment you have to work with already. Nothing?

Then what's your budget?

Ok. You have enough money ($xyz). So then... Tell us what your skill level is.

I could almost guess at this point.

...

I used to have a free downloaded program that allowed you to assign keyboard keys to individual sound files.

once its running, you touch that keu, the sound starts immediately.

might seem ghetto, but... if the keyboard wasnt good enough? you COULD solder leads (long thin wires....) to the inside of a keyboard. run them to a switch.

a key on a keyboard is just a simple SPST momentary swith, normally open.

Couldn't you just use the sustain pedal input of a midi keyboard, and change the midi control in the software? You could only trigger a single sample though - you'd need to change which sample was loaded into your software sampler each time. I've never done it, but maybe there'd be some way of routing something like the http://www.behringer.com/FCB1010/index.cfm FCB1010 to trigger different samplers at once? I don't know :P Just thinking out loud.

I've used the Boss Dr. Sample for theater sound designs and they work very well. Rock solid, buttons always work, ie great for live use.

I think you can use it to collect and edit the samples, but I've only used them for playback. Has a memory card you can dump your samples onto from a computer.

Generally, a Midi pedal plugged into a computer or sampler is the way to go. How to set it up? Not as sure on that one...

An old band of mine did this with an old Alesis drum machine, an M-Audio USB Omni interface, and a Powerbook running Reason. We assigned the different samples as different drum pads in Redrum and mapped the various pads on the drum machine to trigger the Redrum sounds. One of the 1/4" audio outs on the M-Audio interface went to a DI and into the house PA, and another went to a headphone amp so that our drummer (who was doing the sample triggering) could monitor them over headphones.

I'm not sure how you could trigger a number of different samples with a single footswitch. With some modding you could probably set this up with multiple foot switches if you're willing to do a little hacking & soldering in an old usb keyboard.

Otherwise I would recommend a drumpad like a Korg padKontrol or MPD24 or the TriggerFinger. This could be used to control software on your laptop. (Assuming you have a laptop on stage)

If you are looking to save some cash and your samples are relatively short -something like the Boss SP202 could do what you're looking for. Pick one up used on ebay or craigslist.

I trigger samples while drumming. I use a pc gamepad and a computer.

1. Attach a PC USB 12-button 2-analog gamepad to the snare. I used velcro and sponge dishpads.
2. Get and install a program called "Joystick Keyboard", which has one purpose: to convert inputs from the gamepad into user-defined keypresses.
3. Get and install any program that can play a sound (immediately) when the hotkey is pressed. I use Macro ToolWorks. (Everyone who uses a computer should use a macro program.)

That's the basics. I went on to write a macro that changes the 'set' of sounds if I press Button-6. I can alter the pitch and tempo of sounds using one of the analog sticks. I can start recording with one button. Also, i have a computer monitor hanging over my drum set and i can cue through drum patterns when i practice, etc x1000 ...there are tons of things you can do with a gamepad, "Joystick Keyboard", and macro Toolworks. btw, i can play several sounds at the same time.

Hope this helps somebody.
