Need to record E.Guitar

Hi All,

i need to record my Strat into my DAW without micing an amp since I have sound issues to deal with. What is gonna be the best direct in?

I want quiet no hissing and such. But I would like some AMP modeling. Which I can do with VST's but since I need a clean in I thought maybe an amp Modeler might be a good thing. Just not sure if I should go direct in with the preamps in my digi002.

The preamps I have found are not bad that came with the digi002 but if there is a better guitar preamp to compliment the DAW I would be interested.

Not sure I understand the part about sound card issues, but nevertheless...

If I have a choice between computer-taxing plug-ins, or a hardware equivalent, I'm going with hardware every time. Preferences on this may vary based on issues of bit rate or signal integrity.

Kind of a personal deal. If your inputs are clean enough to suit you, use'em. If not, DI or modeling box.

I wonder what that Band in a Box guy woulda said? :D
 
thanks!! Yeah that is kind of the path I was going with. Think I am gonna look into modeling.. Any Idea on decent Amp Modeling rack mounts? Line 6 pod or ?

You could get something like the Edirol external cards, check for a Z-Port and you will be able to record line noise free on a Lo-Z with the gain turned back a bit on the card – use software FX to get the amp simulation like from Aplitube etc.

Thing is though if you got single coil pick-ups in your Strat – and recording into a PC you will almost certainly get noise from those and you will be limited to selecting the lest noisy pick-up – even worse if you are on a CRT (you would need to switch it off)
 
Will the pickups piss the monitor even from a distance?
 
I think you mean ‘will the monitor piss the pick-ups’ depends but you will still be down to one more than likely due to other electrical interference (ie from the computer itself – and if going for a longer cable risk introducing interference in that) humbuckers are the better choice for this kind of thing if poss.

What recording/tracking software do you have now?

I've heard folks around here raving ablout Ntracks. It's basically free, and if I recall it contains several fx plugins.

I've been using PG Music's Pro Tracks for a couple of years. The latest version also contains some FX for free. I don't use any other products from these guys, but I think they have a line of modeling software also.

Pod Pro XT is pretty good, but pricey. Behringer VAMP Pro is dirt cheap, and is a surpriseingly good box for the price. Vox Tonelab I have not used, but it gets high marks from people I trust that actually use amp modelers. I use the Pod Pro myself, but I virtually never use it as a direct box. I use it to drive a variety of amps and speakers, and mic up the speakers.-Richie
