If anyone could help me figure out what to do to record on tracks 5-8. Mainly overdubs one by one....And I'm hoping this doesn't mean it's only for bouncing tracks down. Anyone help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

I used two 488 boxes for a long time -- good boxes and I've downloaded some 488 cuts into my 2816 by Yam and got superior stuff.

But, to your problema: When you record a track or two tracks at once, or more on the 488, you have to put those tracks into the CUE mode. In this mode, covered in the manual, you hear the recorded tracks, and it doesn't matter how loud you hear them, you can adjust the volume, you then over dub the next track.

Let's say you do drums and chords: Now you put those tracks into CUE mode, and add a BASS line, then you put the BASS line into CUE mode and add the, maybe, a horn solo, then you put that track into CUE mode and....And, when you're all done dubbing over, you mix the tracks to a stereo track and then, put it into CD/DAT/Cassette or delete it and start over.

And, that's how you do overdubbing on the 488. It's a good box.
Review the manual and if I can help, let me know.

ok sorry , i forgot to tell you that i never got a manual. i bought it used. the issue is getting anything at all that's audible onto any of tracks 5-8. Any help with that?

Yo Ball of "DA" Foot:

I can't really say why you can't get stuff on the tracks you mention, ==5==8/

If you can record on the other tracks, why can't you record on 5-8?

The 488, as I remember, can record 8 tracks at a time; how many tracks do you record at a time? Usually most do 2 or 3 tracks on the home studio program; however, I'm not sure if you are doing several folks at once in a room with multiple mics?

But, if you are not putting your 1-4 tracks into the CUE mode when you are adding on or "overdubbing," then many strange things can happen: you can lose your previously recorded tracks or lose everything at once.

Since I don't know if the Tascam Help line is open, I don't know what else to tell you except to ask on other forums.

This isnt a problem as silly as not using pre-amps in the line inputs is it?

Or not knowing how to route a mic over from tracks 1-4 to 5-8?

Just checking

NMB and Hornet.

The 488 mixer is in an 8/4/2 configuration. That means it only has 4 busses. The practical upshot of which is that you can only record on a maximum of 4 tracks at any one time (e.g. 1 - 4 or 5 - 8). You may notice that the track arming buttons in the recorder section are labelled in pairs. You can only select one track from each pair (though you can use any combination, just so long as you don't try to arm two tracks sharing the same button).

A Laphroig neat for you!

I guess I was thinking about being able to play/mix all 8 tracks if they were used. I've still got one 488 in my storage area - for its time, it was a pretty good SIAB.
