I'm am considering making the following system:

Asus A7N8X MOBO - www.newegg.com - $118.99
AMD Athlon XP 2800+ - $368.00
Corsair 512MB 32MX8 PC3500C2 - $186.00
Western Digital Special Edition 120GB - $141.00
Western Digital Special Edition 100GB - Already Have
Radeon 9000 Pro AGP 64MB DDR 2D/3D w/TV Out -$85.00
Lite-On LTR-52246S 52x/24x/52x - $49.00

Motherboard Specs:
ATX Form Factor - 12" x 9.6" (30.5cm x 24.5cm)

I will be using it with a MOTU 2408mkii with the PCI-324. The mobo has built in LAN, so as far as I can tell I will only need 1 slot for video, and one for the MOTU. Does anyone have any suggestions on a rackmount case? I have been considering the MAXTOP IPC-4032B-AL (BLACK) 19" RACKMOUNT CASE, but would really like to get the whole package into a 2U case. If anyone has any ideas on the case, or any of the other parts, please let me know. Thanks

im not positive on this, but i think you will definitely need a 4U case because of the pci cards. i built my ASUS P4T-E and was having problems with the length of the rackmount cases, trying to fit it into a mobile rack case. i needed it to be 19"deep, but was sold a 21"deep case after i was told it was 19". (the nightmare!!!!)
so pay attention to your depths if your thinking of fitting it into a case. do a search on ebay for "rackmount computer case" and you should find yourself a good deal for one thatll come w/fans.<----very important!!!
good luck.

Thanks Spacedye, I was wondering about depth. Isn't it common for a 2U case to come with a daughter card so that the PCI cards can fit horizonally, disregarding the layout of the actual MOBO?

hmmmm, im not sure. if thats the case, boy do i deserve a kick in the ass for not doing my homework!!!!! LOL!!!!
let me know how it turns out.

hey, the 1st case on top is my exact one.
just type in "4U rackmount computer case" and check the "titles and descriptions" box on ebay for better search. your bound to find a good deal. i saw a few 4U's for like $70. i paid $120 for mine, w/o power supply.
just be make sure you check the dimensions of your motherboard 1st, and ask the retailer if that size will line up in the case.
and make sure it comes with a power supply if you need one.
good luck!!!

welp, its nice, but you only have room for 1 cd-rom. cant have the cd-rom and cd-rw.
also, it says it only accepts 2 pci cards. dont know if you need more than that, but if you ever do, you wont be able to later.
i did have a 17" at one point and thought that everything was kind of cramped and difficult to work with inside the case.
is there any reason why your looking at 2U's? definitely dont want to go with the 4U?
how much are they asking for that one?

I'm not sure on price yet. I'll be bring this out of the house to record live shows, as well as in alternate locations. I will also be bringing a MOTU2408mkii and 2 ADATs. I need to save all of the room that I can.

are you setting up a mobile recording rig?
because thats what i do. bring the studio to the band kind of thing.
check me out here-http://www.headphoneproductions.com/

yeah, thats basically what I am doing, so the less space the PC takes up the better.

Spacedye! I am just setting up a similar rig as no one is recording live gigs in my area for bands who can't afford to book a studio etc. Is the Mackie 4 bus desk your using enough though for laying tracks down into your daw for mastering?? I thought an 8 bus would be a definate for live bands recording.

yeah, i understand completely. but you may have to make some adjustments once youve got all of your equipment together.
do you plan on putting other stuff in your mobile rack? and how many things? also take into consideration the weight of your gig rig. you alone have to be able to haul it in and out of the places you plan on recording at. up and down the steps as well. dont forget that!!! LOL!!!

isaak,
no, the 4 bus isnt enough for live recordings. its only good for getting drums and bass at the same time. i dont really do live recordings and i really should take that off my website. thanks for the reminder.
but i did record a live band with an electronic drum kit, so it was possible like that.
the most i have gotten, obviously, was 12 tracks. almost enough, but it really depends on the size of the drummers kit.
this all could be avoided by me spending 1000's of dollars on a better soundcard. :(

I agree totally! My setup is almost identical to yours, only with a motu 2408mkIII. I havn't decided on a desk yet. The motu 2408mkIII has a dsp card that allows you to mix live on the computer using its DSP software. I am just weighing up whether I need an external mixer and the mackie compact desks were my first choice, but was just a little concerned if it would do the job as I would like to be able to recording more then 4 busses. The motu allows 8 in 8 out with zero latency on dry sound. decisions! decisions!
