i'm using cakewalk 9 with a direct pro 2496 soundcard, and since the stupid thing does not play midi, i need a second card to do that. i'm planning to play softsynths and softsamplers from that card in the same computer (until i get another one). any input?

Midi

Don't get a second soundcard unless you absolutely need to. The possible headaches with irqs and setup aren't worth the midi support.

Get a standalone USB midi interface (assuming you've got usb in your machine). If you don't have usb you could get a parallel port based device but I've heard they are slower.

I use the Midiman usb 2x2 and it's great...no conflicts and you can swap it between machines while they are still running. No reboots!

I use the midiman to play softsynths and to sequence a keyboard and analog sequencer and it works great (win 2k and ME)

get a grip, grip...lots of people hear are running 2 cards...its not that hard.....

anyway his DP does have midi/in outs...hes just looking for a synth....

The SB Live ($40) gets along very well with other cards. Just make sure your main audio card is installed first. The new Audigy ($70)is supposed to be even better than the Live for MIDI. I'm thinking about picking one up myself.

I'm running an SBLive and an Echo Mia with zero problems.

Just make sure if you install a Creative card that it be installed FIRST (I understand they can be crabby about IRQs and setups). Uninstall everything, install the SBLive or Audigy and then install your 24-bit card.

I had no problems installing my Mia after the SBLive and they are working very well together.

as was pointed out the Direct Pro has midi...i believe it performs well with ASIO applications like Reason....Cakewalk 9 won't do softsynths, so a soundblaster won't help you here, though you could play soundfonts loaded into a soundblaster, i suppose...Logic or Cubase might be the way to go for playing soft synths with the Direct Pro, since last i heard, Aardvark still doesn't have WDM drivers for Sonar, which are required to get latency low enough to play soft synths in Sonar...

j, the DirectPro does not have MIDI in the sense that postalblue seems to mean. It has a MIDI interface only -- no synth. Re the comment about Cakewalk 9 and softsynths, I don't think that's strictly true; for example, I believe many people use Cakewalk 9 with Gigasampler. But if it didn't, then your next comment -- "so a soundblaster won't help you here" -- is backwards. "So a Sound Blaster would help you there" would be correct.

I am running a SB Live and Audiophile with zero problems...i didn't even have to configure the irqs...

I was told the exact opposite by my computer guru. He said the Live is not crabby about which IRQ it uses. So I installed my M-Audio card first, and the Live just went to the IRQ that was available. Go figure.
