Okay, here is a short clip of some of metal thrown together just for a little recording practice. I'd like to get some opinions on it since I have been doing this too much and I feel like I have worn out my ears.....haha.
I get vastly different impressions of this when listening on different sound systems, I think that's why I'd love to get some input from different ears. I think that it may have a couple of problems right off the bat, but I'm not going to mention anything for hopes that someone else will say the same thing, thus making me feel much better about everything! Appreciate any input, guitar sounds, drum mix, overall, anything!

I don't hear any problems in the playing.....or is that not what you meant? Timing seems on. Is it just one guitar, or multi? Seems a bit thin for your sound, unless it is not several tracks layered. No bass, correct? Mix just seems to be missing some bottome end, but it doesn't sound like you added any yet, so I can't complain about anything.

Hope that's what you are looking for dude. Sounds like a great start.
Ed

I'd like the guitar tone better if there were some bass in there with it. Not that it's bad by itself, it just seems kind of thin on it's own which is probably just where it should be once there is a bass track. Drums sound cool.

This kicks ass Metal!!! Surely you will go on to create a finished tune with it??!!
Love the tone!! The drum intro is absolutely perfect, along with the the cymbals . They are just the right volume, and in just the right spot. You have an excellent sense of timing. It is put togather very well. You are one talented dude. I can not hear one thing needing improvement, well I do think the drums are so well done they should be brought to the front just a wee bit more. More volume with Kick Bass possibly?? The drums are awesome.

So, really nothing to do, Except to finish it!! :D

You said you heard problems in the very beginning, maybe my ears are all wrong, but the beginning does kick ass!

My two cents worth....Bass, Killer High end lead(don't know if I said that right), LOuder Kick bass. But you know me, I am a babbler! :D :D Love your "test".

EDIT: Ya know I have been sitting here while writing, and rewriting my post, listening, and now I think maybe the drums don't need to be brought up?
Crap, maybe I have been listening toooo long myself :D LIke about 30 minutes!! This is soooo good!!

What they said...

That is two guitars, right?

Very nice riff.

Whoah!!! Ain't nothing wrong with that, baby. That fucking rocks. I can only imagine how much heavier it will sound with bass. Awesome guitar sound, and pretty heavy drums, too. WOW!

Thanks everybody!
The problems I thought it might have were basically overcompression or bad levels on the cymbals, etc...
I did record a bass with this but I've got the level way down cause I was trying to find a good way to fit it in and I never quite found it....haha.
Appreciate the comments on the guitars. It is four tracks (two tracks with little gain on each side hard panned), and I agree they are a little short on low end as I was digging for a spot to get the bass to fit in, I don't know why I didn't bring the bass back up to a good level before I posted this.......oh well, I guess I was just tired of messing with it!! ;) and yes, most of this stuff will be ending up in a proper song some time or another!

Thanks!

Well judging by the quality of your playing and sound, I feel a bit stupid giving you a lesson in recording. But I'll just remind you that sometimes an instrument can sound shitty and thin alone, but perfect in a mix. So, I don't think the guitars were thin at all. I think they might just seem thin since there was no (or very little) bass guitar in that snippet. Bring the bass up and I don't think the guits will sound thin at all.
Rock in...I mean...on!

This is a person preference issue. But I am going to guess that you mic'ed the guitar using an SM-57... would this be accurate? The only reason I mention this... is the 57 has a "boxy" overtone that I am not very fond of... and it comes screaming through on this recording. I have noticed with the 57... there only seems to be a single sweet-spot on each amp you mic with it... and if you don't find it... you get recording-ala-box.

Eeep.. I sure hope I guessed the mic right :D

Aside from that... I am really diggin' it!

Chris

While you are at it (identifying the mic) would you be so kind as to list your other equip?

Actually, it's a 58. My particular 58 sounds better than my 57 to my ears (not a universal statement about 57's.....just mine in particular). It's about 2" off the grill along with an Audio Technica 3035 about 2 feet away straight at the same speaker.

Thanks for listening!

No problem!
Guitars:
Jackson USA soloist w/Seymour Duncan "full shred" pickup, Peavey 5150 II head > Marshall 2X12 cab with 75 watt Celestions.
Aforementioned SM58 and Audio Technica 3035 > M-Audio DMP3 preamp > M-Audio Delta 44 > Sonar 4

Bass: (however basically non-existent on this track....)
Ibanez Soundgear > Sansamp RBI rackmount direct box > Delta 44 >

Drums:
Drumkit from Hell Superior, Programmed manually in Sonar, Post-processing with the Elemental Audio plugins and Lexicon reverb.

Sounds good... I personally like when a the kick drum is a bit louder. The way it is now, it sort of reminds me of the old school metal kick drum, like Maiden or something, where it isn't as in your face... It's does sound good though.

Tight interplay between drums and guitars.

Crash cymbal is a little too hot :33 to :47 where there's so much of it used, IMO. I'd be interested to hear it with the bass brought up - but this sounds like you might not really even need a bass :D if you brought up the lower end of the guitars.

Tim

Thanks, Tim. I agree with you about the crash. That was one of the things that I thought was coming off as just a little too much if you know what I mean. I need to get that and the the bass squared away and maybe re-post this.
As far as the kick drum goes, yeah I'd like to get it a little louder. I'm probably gonna have to back off on the volume of the whole track because I think that is what's giving me trouble.....maybe bringing everything down a bit would let the kick stand out a little more.

Thanks guys!

Okay, here's a new mix with the bass at an acceptable level and less overheads. (plus a few more little tweaks)

The guitar may seem too quiet now, and I may have done some overcompensation which I am notorious for, I don't know, but I would love to get some opinions!

Thanks ~ metal

Still sounds awesome. Guitars could come up a bit, but they still have a great tone. I also like where this is heading.....more please.... :D

Thanks Dogman!
As soon as I can get my shit together pretty well, I definitely plan to start posting some finished songs on here. Maybe in a few weeks (or months?) I've got alot of new gear that I'm trying to get dialed in and really learn, and believe me, I'm excited about recording some classic Metalhead tunes for you guys! Thanks for the listen!

Dude! I had totally forgotten about that deal until just a couple days ago I saw "Be Heard" in my project files and I was like "What the Fuck is that?" I had to open it up and listen before I remembered......
Shit on me, I was gonna do vocals on that thing but never got around to it.....
Someday soon I will do that! Then you can steal it and do an evil little duet with me ;) ...................word
