Alright here is my setup. I have a new desktop hp with 4gb windows home 7. I have a sure sm7B mic. 2 Ikey 8" studio monitors. All i'm trying to do is lay some vocals over beats. I was told by others to get pro tools. However I'm hearing great things about ableton live 8. if i get ableton I would still have to buy an interface right? if so i think i need a 2 in 2 out inferface with ableton vs. pro tools coming with the interface. also i've never used a music recording software so user friendly for newbies would be great. I'm leaning towards ableton and a seperate interface would that be the way to go? any imput is greatly appreciated.

If your into beat making, I would recommend ableton. But if I were you I would look into both before you buy. And yes, you will need to purchase an interface if you go with ableton.
