God this site is fucked...

Anyway. I've got 3 trombone tracks, each playing the same thing but in different notes. It's time to mix these bastards, and I'm here looking for some advice on EQ, panning, levels of each, and anything else that may be relevant.

For what its worth, the song bares no resemblance to ska. It is rock and actually sounds a lot like Yo La Tengo.

thanks...

Whatever the hell that means...:D

Anyway, you didn't say if they are playing a featured soli section or background parts behind vocals, etc.

Either way, I would definitely pan them a bit, whether narrow or extreme is a taste issue. Try it and see what sounds better. More reverb if they are in the background, less if in front. A delay may be effective as well, especially timed to the song tempo, but it's hard to get too specific without hearing stuff. Chances are compression will help in almost every situation with a trombone section. Keeps the occasional "BLATTT" from causing the listener to lose bowel control.

If there is an annoying frequency, feel free to notch it out, especially if it is competing with the vocals. If one or more got too close to the mics and you're getting an obnoxious proximity effect, you may want to use a high pass filter too.

Thanks LD - the panning was what I've been particularly concerned about. I tracked using quite a bit of compresssion and somehow got some nice recordings (used a 4033) for never dealing with brass, so I may be closer to a decent mix than I thought. The most difficult part may end up being where to place them in the mix with the levels.

thanks again...

:D

Yo Vurt:

"Playing the same thing with different notes...."

This could mean: ad libbing on the cord progressions -- each measure states a cord -- jazz stuff? Like you can do different notes, harmony or Ravel types of up/down -- sounds intricate.

Sounds creative. Sounds good.

Good luck.

Or it could simply mean I don't know what the hell I'm talking about.
