Got a guy that I'm talking about doing a trade with. He's got a 5150 head and 5150 straight cab. He's wanting $1,100. I'm thinking of offering him $1,000.

What condition is it in? How old is it? Did he tour with it? Does it sound like a broken lightbulb when you set it down?

Damn, that dude loves some resonance and presence!
Looks like it has some medium wear and tear. Just looking around the interwebs, I think you are within the range of reasonableness. You might be able to find one for less than $1000. For mint condition 5150 half stacks, some guys are asking $1200. If this dude is set on the $1100 price, it might make sense for you to pay an extra $100 and find an immaculate one.
I'm also partial to 5150s because I was in a band a while back where our lead guitarist played out of one and I loved his sound. That amp was freakin' indestructable.

If it's any help, I've played one for the last 5 or more years and it's great, I don't even go amp window shopping anymore. It's taken a beating and keeps going, it's fallen off quads plenty of times (don't ask), it will not die.
IMO, you DO need to make it adjustable bias (look it up, it's easy); at stock they are running the tubes quite cold and the "clean" channel sounds pretty clunky. Once you get those tubes running where they should be, it's amazing. The distortion gets a lot better too. Brilliant amp and worth the money!

I didn't end up getting it. We couldn't reach an agreement. He thought it was worth more than they are really getting on the market. Oh well.

I agree with these posts. My 6505 head (same thing as 5150, just renamed) is definitely one of the best purchases I've ever made. I bought it as a display model, and was maasively disappointed with the distortion. So disappointed that I knew there was something wrong. I retubed it, plug it in and my jaw hit the floor on the first chord I played. Those things even make sketchy guitarists like me sound good.
