... after taking a extended layoff, my band has recently started getting together and playing again. We are going to attempt to play a bbq/pigroast/outdoor party this Saturday, and one of the new songs we are trying is a cover of Led Zeppelins "The Wonton Song" from Physical Graffiti I am pretty nervous to begin with having not played out in over a year...and just having learned this song,I am curios as to how it sounds to others.I am especially wondering about my guitar sound/tone.There are some parts in the song were JImmy page has a kinda swirley almost leslie guitar sound, and I am having a hard time recreating that with my setup.I use a Line 6 Variax 500 into a Pod XT live.that feeds into my amps effect loop which also feeds the PA.Annny ways, sorry bout the wordy post...it is cool to have a bit of the butterflies again about playing out!

The Wonton Song

I never like to bump my stuff...but I got a bad case of the nerves and just was looking for some feedback......board is a little crazy today so I thought maybe it got lost in the shuffle....last bump...I promise!

variax,

I'd like to give you an opinion but something's wrong with the link; it won't download.

rpe

Yeah, I thought it was my comfuser, but seing as RPE had the same problem, I think there's something wrong with the link, buddy.

It goes through the whole download process, but then the player just sits there and doesn't open the file.

Yea, that's what happened to me also.

Damn soundclick....ok..here is a link to my music page...the tune is 1st on the list...sorry bout that!

Ok...I'm going in...If I'm not back in 15 minutes, call SoundSick Busters.

Sounds good. Maybe a bit too wet, but I haven't heard the original in a while, so it might be me.
Frankly though, the drums aren't tight at the most important parts. The playing is good, but the transitions are stumbling a bit. The punch at 1:43 is the way they should all sound. The tightness, I mean. But I love the organic sound of the recording and the guitar sounds great.

Hi variax....I agree with Rami on the tightness.

I do like a live sound. This is very live sounding.

On my cans, it is fuller, tighter and has more punch.

I like the axes and the bass sounds good.

With Zepplin, in most of their songs, the stops are precise and the starts emphatic.

I think you will do fine. :)

Hey Axeman, what's up? Yeah I've been away a few days, missed this thread...

The Wonton Song, always loved that riff and break... good rockin stuff... anyway, thoughts on your version...

Nice playing, good Zep tone overall... maybe a little more depth on the guitar (mid or low)
Yeah very good playing overall, you guys rock... wouldn't mind watching you guys play anytime :D
The outro is cool, lacks the groovy effects of the original, but playing sounds spot on. Good stuff man, dont worry about it too much, just rock out :D :D

Good cover version!
Taking on Zep tunes is always hard. The vocals are always tough to hit...I would have to say that is the weak point on this one.
As far as the tightness - I think it is pretty close. I used to be in a band and we would take on Rush tunes. I, as a drummer, would site down with the bass player and practice the song until we were as tight as possible. Then when we added the rest of the band it would be that much better.
I also like the other covers on your page...!
Check out my covers posted a couple days back and let me know what you think!

Hey man, sorry I missed this esterday...I was on the road for 6 hours, so never turned the computer on once we arrived.

Playing sounds pretty good to me....I can't nit the drums, as I don't even know how to hit one.... Not sure about the vocals...they do sound really verby to me, but this is live, correct?

Anyways, I wouldn't be worried about playing this live....it sounds fine. Just keep working on it, and you'll get it real tight.

Nice job man....

Thanks for taking the time to go back and check it out!We are a 3 piece, and the bass player sings lead, so, he has a hard time locking in with our drummer at times...this is a new one for us so we are trying to tighten it up...I'm nervous cause there will be alot of musicians in the crown..and musicians make me nervous :o !
We recorded this with my minisdisk walkman and a single stereo mic out in the room...was a kinda big room with a high ceiling thats not really treated so that may be partly why it sounds kinda verby.

Hi True, thanks for checking it out...we will tighten it up hopefully by Saturday! :p Man, that Zep rhythm section of JPJones and Bonham is just awesome...when you really listen to them in detail.I've come to think that the force behind Zeppelin was John Bonham and his drumming...one of a kind!

Hey Snake whas' up?...I am struggling with getting some "beef" in my sound without muddying it up...still learning alot about eq and what freq.'s work best for guitar.Gonna knock the "swirl" factor up a few notches for this patch as well.Gonna record a bit at the gig and I will post how it goes down "live" (if it's not to crappy) thanks man!

Thanks dude! As I posted earlier, we are a trio, and the bassist is the lead vocalist..1st time for him as that, and we struggle at times keeping it tight! We are big Rush fans also (especially the drummer) so at times..he gets a little fill happy, and we lose our groove, but it's cool cause it always keeps us on our toes! I will check out your stuff when I get home from work today!

Hey Dogman, yeah, the room is pretty large and untreated, and its just a single mic, so it is kinda verby...I guess , having not played out in over a year, I'm just kinda jumpy and nervous. It's actually pretty cool to feel this way again..it's been to long!
Thanks man!

good stuff!

your singer dude sounds a bit like Ian Astbury - which is all good in my books

I think it's fine.... granted there are some loose parts, but remember one thing...Led Zep live was very sloppy, well at least Jimmy Page was....That is always my inspiration before every gig, knowing that Jimmy was one of the greatest ever to hold a guitar....If he was that sloppy, well then I don't need to strive for perfection or get myself all wound up over it.... I try, and do my very best everytime, but if there is a lil slop here and there no biggie....

It sounds pretty good but the chords during the bridge sound a little off. Try these. Have a great time at the party.

Sounds good, you`ve got a nice live thing going on there.

Good preformance on all parts.

BoB and Jim would be proud

Yeah, your live set is cool.

I've added all your newest covers to "my station"!
(543 Classic Rock cover songs by 171 bands. Fav station of 3 users).
For best effect, use "Hifi-Shuffle" play! Thanx! ;)

to be honest - i love 'sloppyness' and messy guitars, adds a textured and more human feel... otherwise it may as well be a machine playing the music

The vocals are pretty thin. He needs some fattening them up.
The whole sound lacks meat & that's listening with headphones. Might well be the recording medium.
The guitar sounds are pretty good the tone changes work well good work!!!!
I know this is daggy but I ran the MP3 through the W/Media player EQ & with a boost @ 31 Hz, 62Hz, 250Hz %00Hz 2kHz & 4 Khz it sounds much, much meatier. That EQing is pretty dickie but you get the drift.
You need a common thump ending or something.
I'm glad I dropped in for a listen Phys Graf & Presence are my fav ZEP as hard rock albums, (the House for being wonderfully over the place, three for well that folky take on life, the 1, then 2 etc etc etc)
