I just recently purchased a TASCAM DP-24.

I needed a quick easy way to get some ideas down onto the 'sketchbook'-and I have a few questions-need of opinions for recording the following;

I have compressors: dbx163 & Alesis 3630 to use, as well as, a Tech21 Sans Amp Bass DI. The bass I'm using is a Rickenbacker 4001 ['74 JetGlo].
--what would be the best/optimum signal route? Bass-DI-compressor to TASCAM?
--I know the Alesis & dbx163 aren't the top-drawer stuff, but out of the two-is there a best route for recording? settings for that fabled-Ricky Sound?

--I have an [circa 1998] Alesis SR16 to just track basic drum work, but I did noticed that it's making crappy/scrappy distortion that's probably coming from the SR16-itself...I have a feeling that it's about to give up the ghost, but in the meantime-does anyone have a favorite drum machine?
I have been looking around and it looks like the SR16's still being produced-and curious what's the best/value for money option out there-

I'm sure I'll have other questions-but hoping to get some feedback on these two issues, now. I'm not looking for perfection-just some cost effective/creative suggestions for nailing a good Ricky and drum sound to the DP-24.

THANKS IN ADVANCE-
