need some criticism

just need some feedback if anyone has the time. 2 clips and one short song posted so far. what can I do to improve my recordings? do my ideas suck? please don't hold back, I ain't no sissy.

the clip "drive" was recorded through a pc mic and I did the drums with fruity loops. "just a song" is something I through down to try out the cheap-ass recording stuff I just got ($199 recording package @ MF and an audiobuddy). "#3" is a rhythm I'm workin out.

by the way I don't play the harmonica, I just got it and want to learn.

Ok, #3 it is. Right off, not tight at all. The recording is ok and stuff but how many of the same guitar can a song use? VEry distracting, try playing each track to a click....

Wait, that's IT?

There's not any song at all...sounds like some jamming. :(
 
I agree, #3 is sloppy as hell. You mean using the same guitar for all tracks is distracting? Yea and there really is nothing there that is a real song. It was just stuff to record for the sake of recording. Guess I need to be writing.
 
Very clean, nicely recorded guitar on #3. I didn't find it sloppy at all but I'd describe it as laid back in a Neil Young sort of way. Worth developing I'd say!
 
thanks commander, but I really do have to get some songs written. I tend to do alot of recording of unfinished pieces. maybe i fear that my song writing will suck.

You'll never know unless you try! Perhaps team up with a lyricist?

what kind of guitar you use? what mic and preamp? thanks
 
the guitar is a Yamaha f310 (cheapo made outa plywood). the mic is an mxl 990, preamp is an audiobuddy, into onboard sound of my pc. If u like the guitar sound, you can still find those F310's on ebay for $99 and get it setup properly and you'll be surprised. I've had mine for like 5 years now, drug it all over the place so it's beat to hell but I like it. thanks for the comments.
 
hey commander u know any lyricists I could colab with? lyrics are a bitch for me. I do have my moments when things flow well but I rarely take advantage of it when it hits.

Don't give up. Keep workin on it.
Looks like you got some fans already.
Second guessing always got me into to trouble so I suggest that you stay positive.
Not everyone we'll like what you write but as long as you enjoy it thats all that matters.
Unless your one of those monkeys that like other people writing stuff for them and all they have to do is look pretty. Lame if you ask me lol.
 
#3 is a rythm pattern that could work if the timing was tight all the way and you EQ'ed the 3 guitars to their own frequency ranges. Also; keep the main guitar middle and pan the two others hard left/right

Just a Song. Not a bad voice. Terrible mix. Sounds like everything is recorded one one mic without any mix at all. Allthough I know it's several takes. Work on the mix. The song itself is very predictable. And the lyrics.... hehe.
Main message: work on your mixing skills

Drive. Again this one suffers from the mix, witch is terrible. Or is it the resolution of the MP3? Dunno. Interesting rythm though. I wont comment the lyrics, since there aint any. With a proper mix this can be a promising start of something that could work.

Drive by The Cars was a great song. Ever heard it?
 
Drive was recorded a few months ago with a $2 pc mic and monitoring through $6 speakers. That's where it's suffering. It's 3 guitar parts, no bass, and a drum loop I did in fruity loops. #3 is 3 guitar parts using the same guitar and mic. The rhythm is at center, another part to compliment the rhythm is hard left, and a cheesy lead line is hard right. It's just a rhythm I'm messing with and I wanted to see what a couple guitars would sound like panned left and right, a study if you will. Just a Song, well it's self explanatory, lol. Just something to try out my first condensor/preamp and some cheapo harmonicas I got to mess with, also recorded with the same mic for all parts. It's the only mic I have besides the pc mic and I ain't going back to it. The vox seems to be kinda loud in Just a Song, and the guitar was recorded with some 6 month old strings on the guitar. I did'nt feel like changing them that night, the night I got my mic/preamp. #3 was recorded a couple days later after changing the strings. Right now I'm just tinkering with recording and working on getting some creative juices flowing. Thanks for the comments.

By the way, the mic is an MXL990 and the pre is an AudioBuddy. Any comments on the sound quality? Keep in mind, I'm going through onboard sound and I don't have a compressor yet.
