Need some advice

Okay, so I'm slowly building a somewhat modest home studio to record in. I just put together my new acoustic drumkit, with mics and whatnot. Now, I'm working on PCI interface. (or firewire, or USB, doesn't matter)...

I've got a 32x8 board, which I want to run the 8 sub-groups into 8 inputs on the other end. So each of the subgroups can be on a seperate track (specifically for recording drum tracks).


I've been looking at the Delta 1010, MOTU 828MKII (which I think is only Mac Compatable), and the Digidesign 001 (which I don't think I want, because it only has 6 TRS inputs).

The PC I'll be using is custom build. 2.53 Ghz P4, 2GB PC2100, 80 HD for basic crap, (2) 250GB Firewire drives for music data storage, and right now the soundcard's a stock that's one my Intel 865 motherboard.

Any recommandations on which one of the three's the best? I like the Delta 1010, but from what I've read it doesn't seem to come with any software, which I guess is fine, since you can find that stuff anywhere, dirt cheap these days. I liked the MOTU the best, but when I read up on their site, it seems like you have to get something to adapt it to being PC compatable. So that kinda deterred me from that.

Any help from anyone who's shopped these before, or owns one would be great. OR if there's something I should be looking at, that I haven't seen yet. I wanna keep my price less than $1000, so keep that in mind when recommending stuff.

All those units are good - it's really down to the features you need.

Also check out the 1010lt - comes with breakout cables instead of the rack unit but you still get 8 analog ins & it's a lot cheaper.

Out of interest, why are you going for PC2100 ram? That 865 chipset will handle dual channel PC3200. It should also have an 800Mhz FSB, so you should make sure you get a P4 with an 800Mhz fsb, not a 533Mhz

Well, the main reason for going with PC2100, was the original board I had in there could only support it. So when I upgraded the board to the 865 (the other one died), I just doubled the memory. The guy at the parts place suggested that I keep the same stuff.

As for the processor, I got it through an accommodations program when I worked for Best Buy. I got the 2.53 (which was the fastest they made at the time), the board, the heatsink, and 512MB of PC2100, for $175. It was a good deal, so I didn't pass it up.

I looked into the 1010LT, but I think I'd rather have the rack unit to go with it. Seems to me like they both do about the same, I'm just into having the rack unit, so I can see that it's working. So, god forbid, something breaks, I can narrow it down. With just the soundcard, it would be tougher to judge if sound was getting from the sub-groups to each track.

But, the info's been helping. I think the Delta will be the one I go with. If anyone has any other suggestions or info, send it on it.
 
I'm not sure I follow you're reasoning for selecting the 1010 over the 1010lt, but if you're willing to pay the price premium, go for it
 
You can't follow it, because I don't think I have any...

Something to do with TRS inputs, over the RCA inputs. Something doesn't click right in my mind. I know there's no signal loss in converting a 1/4" output to RCA, but.. I dunno.

Should I just go with the 1010LT?
 
Heh, yeah if you're going to be running 60 foot cables, then you'd want the balanced inputs the 1010 gives you, but otherwise...

If it was me I'd get the lt & put the $300 I'd saved into a nice mic
 
Another option is an RME Multiface. I have heard nothing but rave reviews about them (I plan on getting one in about a month). You can get the Multiface with the PCI card shipped for about $800. You could then buy N Track for about $50 (a software package) and you would be all set.
