need some advice on decision regarding pro tools...

hey all...back again with yet another question.

the local studio is looking to sell one of their digi 001's with all the pro tools plugins. i had suggested they sell it on e-bay but they need to make the sale by friday as they are looking to buy an hd24 asap. this digi 001 got basically no use since it was just an extra one...originally he was going to sell it for $500, but found out that our local music store would only give him $400 for it, so he'd rather sell it to someone he knows for $400 instead of seeing this store flip it around for $550. As of right now, I am very short on cash, though I could afford this IF I sell off my Delta 66 and my Mackie VLZ Pro 1402, or of course, I could flip it on e-bay and make some extra cash on it.

So say I do buy it, my dilemma is.....for a PC, would I be better off with my set up as of now with the Mackie VLZ Pro 1402 and the Delta 66 using Cubase SX, or would Pro Tools/Digi 001 be the better choice even though I am using a PC?

Hmmm, good question. Kind of a tough choice. Here's my perspective, keeping in mind I have no experience with either the Delta or Mackie mixers.


1) The 001 will hold its value for a while and you'll probably be able to sell it if you don't like it.

2) The 001 does work with Cubase these days. I don't know how the 001 and the Delta 66 compare.

3) Are you running XP? Digi seems to have solved its PC problems since releasing PT LE 5.3.1- the Windows XP version. If you're not on XP, I'd pass.

4) What plugins? PT plugs are ex$pen$ive! If he's giving you Bomb Factory, Waves or TC plugs, it might be an incredible score. Make sure they are PC versions, though, as Mac plugs do not work on PC.

That's what I have to say about it. That's a tough call. I really like PT and my 002, but I also really like Cubase SX.

Forgot to add:

5) Upgrades with your Delta/Cubase system will be plentiful and relatively inexpensive.

6) Upgrades for you 001 system will not really be upgrades: you'll either be buying replacement covertors ($$$) or replacing the system with newer Digi hardware. That's digidesign's MAJOR bummer for home users.

play around with it, decide which setup sounds better or is easier to use and sell the other setup. Both setups have some value in the home-market.

it depends how much editing you want to do, and what your outboard collection is like...

thign is, pro tools digi 001 is nothing compared to the proper pro tools. so dont think you are getting pro tools pro tools, if you get me.

in my scenario, i would rather a solid, reliable machine like a HD24, which i can just plug into the mixer and get on with it. with pro tools running on ANY computer, you're not very mobile unless you rack everything up, not extreemy quick to just get recording straight away, and, you cant deny computers are more prone to just breaking down with driver conflicts and whatever, compared to a dedicated machine like the HD24 anyway.
