well ive been thinking about getting a cheap keyboard to control the midi stuff on sonar 2 xl. So i borrowed my friends yamaha psr170 and hooked it up and was not pleases. When i click to patch in different instruments on the playback not all of them work..like the bird tweet. and about half of the others..why is this and how do is get them to work? also how do i use the dxi synths? and finally when i am playing the keyboard with a patched sonar instrument the keyboard speakers output have both the instrument selected on the keyboard and the one from the computer. How do i hear only the computer's?...please help me im desperate

You are right to be concerned... The bird tweet is essential in creating decent-sounding tracks! ;) :D

As to why your birdie ain't tweeting, I'm not sure. What are you using to create the audio output for your MIDI track? It could be that whatever synth you're using for output doesn't have that patch...? Although I thought that the bird tweet was part of General MIDI, so I would think it should be there.

As to the other question, you should be able to turn off the sound from your keyboard by turning off some sort of Local Echo setting on the keyboard. Or, if you'd rather listen to the keyboard instead of the patch from within the computer, you should be able to turn off Input Monitoring for that track. To use a DXi, add a DXi to the FX bin of an audio track, then direct the output of the MIDI track to use that audio track (it should appear in the available outputs dropdown list).

HTH :)

Click on INSERT, select DXIsynth, select VSC. When the option bar comes up select "First Synth Ouput(Audio). On a midi channel you want to use to control the Sound Canvas Synth, select OMNI as the IN. Select Edirol VSC as the OUT. You can assign it in the CH option to send on any of the 16 midi channels, selcect 1 for the first track. Select the BANK you want, then select the PCH you want. On the synth AUDIO track select your soundcard as the output. Then press a key. You`ll hear the GM voice playing back.

If you want to use the external PSR Yamaha you`ll need to import an "instrument definition" file that is stored in a Sonar folder so that voices you see in SOnar will be the same voices on your external synth, The method to do this is in the HELP file. Here`s a quick guide....

To Import Instrument Definitions
Choose Options-Instruments to display the Assign Instruments dialog box.
Click Define to display the Define Instruments and Names dialog box.
Click Import to display the Import Instrument Definitions dialog box.
Choose the file that contains instrument definitions for your manufacturer, and click Open. SONAR displays a list of all the instrument definitions in the file.
Choose one or more instruments from the list, and click OK.
Click Close to close the Define Instruments and Names dialog box.
The instrument definitions you imported should now appear in the Uses Instrument list in the Assign Instruments dialog box.

Hope that helps you out. :)
