Looking for some inexpensive overhead drum mics. I am looking to spend between $150-$200 per mic. Any suggestions?

We are using AKG C1000's and alternating with Sure SM-81's. They are both very good sounding. I can't wait to post something with the new drum setup.

Both these mics are in your range.

I have been using AKG D418 for overheads for quite some time now. I have had great results with them. I need to post some new MP3 files.

wow, thanks for the fast reply. I'm looking more toward the AKG C1000 because it is less money. I can't seem to find the AKG D418 online anywhere? Also is the Rode NT3 any good for overhead? Thanks

Re: Rode NT3s

Rode NT3s work great as drum overheads...I use a pair and am very happy with them (only $150/mic as well)

I've benn using Octava MC-012s and also AT-4033s. Not sure which I like better. They each have a different color. The 4033s are a little out of your price range but the Octavas can be had at Guitar Satin for about what you want to spend.

Check out the Marshalls, too... $100 a pop list... I've seen 3 for $249.00!

Abemusic.com has (had) the MXL603s for $75 ea. and free shipping if your order is over $100. I'm pretty impressed with mine so far.

I'm surprised the Crown C700's haven't made an appearance on this list....good little mics and can be found at $100 or so.

This is a little out of your price range but it might be something to think about a little later down the road and/or for anyone else who's interested. The Audio Technica AT825 Stereo mic: I've heard some good stuff about this mic, and I heard it goes for about $700 Canadian (so what ever that currency rate translates too), not a bad price at $350 a mic but just a little out of your price range, like I said before.

Check it out at

I use a matched pair of CM700s. However i used to revel about them. they are amazing for cardiods. but i really wish i had a pair of omnis for overheads. Omni mode i have started using it on everything with my AKG414... so dont discount some omni small diaphragms if you can try some out. it represents a real sound since its not directional.

Thanks for all the great responses. I'm checking out all of these mics. Where can you find the Crown C700's for $100 or so? I only see them for $247.

I think he meant that price used. They are around $200. $247 is way too much for a single one. igot my matched pair for $420

so far I'm leaning still towards the AKG C1000s's. I can get a pair new for $299. Are the Marshall MXL603s any good? How would they compare?

Oopps..my bad. Yeah, you can find them around 100 to 125 used, but Guitar Satan has been closing these out and I've seen them priced a few weeks ago at 150 new.

The AKG C1000s sound peaky in the high range to me. The MXL 603S sounds quite a bit smoother to me. I also really like the Audix TR-40 omni mics for overheads and they are available as a matched set for around $400 new.
