Need new recording amp

I vote w/ RayC for the pignose. I have the 40 watt version which I mod'ed to accept a 12" scorpion. Very versatile and gutsy tone. Also, for the studio, I replaced 6L6's with 6V6's, which dropped the power out to about 20 W., making it easier to control . Sounds awesome into a 4-12 box (or 2)

i use a fender hot rod deluxe, the big brother of the blues junior.

both excellent amps for my taste! highly recommend either one, maybe the junior for less wattage and being able to crank it more to get more crunch!

The DeluxeReverb is 22 watts. Its still loud, but not really loud. It only has one 12" speaker ...and I don't think its a very efficient speaker at that. But for your "under a thousand" mark, go for a used THD HotPlate to use with the Fender for those late night sessions.

But if you already have a speaker cab, check out a THD UniValve. It varies from about 3-15 watts depending on what tubes are used. And it is right up your alley on the tone description. Has a built in HotPlate (the stand-a-lone HotPlate has more tonal options though). Plus its a tone freaks dream when you start experimenting with different tubes.

+1 on the Univalve if you already have a cab. Especially for studio use. Otherwise the Deluxe Reverb, Princeton Reverb, Champ, Champ II or Super Champ would be good candidates.
 
Last but not Least.......

I totally forgot to mention the WEST LABS PicoFire. This is an extremely good sounding little boutique amp that can be yours for less than huge dollars. I tried one out last year ( a prototype) and was very impressed with its versatility and sheer balls at any power level. I believe that the PicoFire was designed for use in the studio, given it's relatively tiny footprint. It may be available as a kit, for the true techno-geeks among us. Check it out at www.westlabs.com.

What about an Epiphone Valve Jr.? It\'s not the greatest, but for $100, who cares? Get it at Guitar Center and if you don\'t like it, just bring it back!

Yeah, I've got one of these, they're great. The tubes are a little shoddy, but it sounds nice over all. One day I'll replace the tubes and speaker and wire another output jack (there's a spare 8 Ohm lead inside), but it's a great sounding little amp straight from the store.

Boy these amps bring back memories, I use to have 2 of these amps back in the seventies. An Avalon and a Fillmore slave. The used to be made down the street in Flint MI. I remember the good ole boys in the neighborhood used them till their manager stole them all. Remember Mark, Mel and Donny the infamous Grand Funk Railroad?

Yeah...I remember them well...I knew Mark F a bit. They opened for us before they got famous, then we opened for them. I was in a band called PlainBrownWrapper then.....another lifetime....Originally from Lansing but transplanted to the plains of east-central Illinois

Yep, I remember you guys use to play out at Sherwood Forest in Davison MI alot didn't you. Those were the good old days. The Nudge, Brownsvile Station, Dick Wagner and the Frost, Bob Seger, MC5, SRC, Frigid Pink and of course Alice Cooper.

What a great little place to play, remember the WILD WEDNESDAYS and SUPER SUNDAYS. They were micro version of Woodstock ;)
 
Yeah...they tell me that we played there....and a lot of other places that I barely remember.. What band (s) were you in..Maybe I can put a face with your name. Do you remember Zookie and the Potentates??? Larry Johnson ?? Al Shane (Schoen)??Ben Bost???

Personally - i'd recomend to stay clear of all the digital modeling amps! Try looking at a mesa mavrick - 30watt class a blues amp - great tone! or try a vox AC30 and stick a tube screamer or fuzz face infront of it if you need a bit of filth! Orange do some real nice gear but if your wallet can take it try a Matchless - 10watts & £1000!!!

I've seen that ad about the new Princeton, but have yet to see one on sale anywhere.
