Buuut, it won't work worth a shit with a 60 watt head right now. If that's what's sought, well, you know.
It depends on the speaker some too though.
Some high power speakers are suprisingly efficient with lower power.

But the main thing is ..... he said he uses something else for gigging and will likely get another amp down the road and he's only gonna use this for practice and sitting around jamming right now.
Since at some point he's gonna need his own rig he probably needs to prepare this cab for that purpose unless he's just made of money so he can buy however many cabs he needs.
If it were me I'd be buying for the future and accept whatever the sound was in the meantime since it's only a practice amp.
Obviously you would go the other route.
Simply two different approaches.

The Sunn 200S used the Dave Hafler Dynaco Mark III Power amp which did indeed produce 60 Watts - at less than 1% distortion. In actual practice, it could produce a lot more wattage at 5% distortion, which is where Fender typically rated their amps.

But then again, what the hell do I know about this bass speaker stuff?

Sorry, that's just not universally (or even mostly) true. Many speakers that can handle high power levels are also very efficient. I have a 6 watt Supro amp that sounds great through my 200 watt Marshall cab.

re: 800 wt speaker and 60 amp... tell him it's too much when he starts sendin it squarre waves...

Hey!

I got dibs on the roadie/driver gig!

And I'm not disagreeing with anyone else's choices here (don't know enough to have an opinion on them), but I think, especially looking down the road, that if you get the aforementioned JBLs, you would not regret it.

Except for the load-in and load-out, but you'll get that with pretty much any 2x15 cab.

yup...
I been lookin into those JBL's. And I think I'll be buyin for down the road as well.
:drunk:

If you get those JBLs

Let me know where you got them, especially if their the 140s. I've been looking for a reliable source.

Harvey, thanks for that. I never new (or if I did I forgot :o ;)) the Sunn Dynaco connection, let alone Mr. Hafler and Dynaco. I dropped in 'cause we used to run five of those cabs back in our 'Joshua haydays (plus the one chap with the '1000s config -he was the only one blowing D130's :D
LOL with the 'won't light up the voice coils thing.
Our bass ran a pair of 100/200S's over three cabs- one over a 140' pair, other on 4-130's. That was what a hell of an amp. Headroom for days.
Wouldn't it be fair to say 60 watts here is on par with about 200 of your typical solid state?
I don't have my cabs anymore but still have three of the frames hanging about.

I've got a 2X15 cab and plan on using my old Sunn 200S 60 watt tube head. The head has a 4 and 8 ohm out.

My plan is to wire em in 4 ohm but it's been a loong time since I've bought bass speakers.....I was lookin at JBL's Eminence, Pyle. Jensen etc and I'm a little out of my element. Too many choices and not enough savvy on my part. :)

Ya got any preferences? Why?

Much thanks.
I've always used JBL 15" I've never heard anything that got close enough to their warmth.
Peavey 15" are very punchy but they are good dependable speakers.
