no....not that crack....er sorry
I need more snare crack in my recording. it is not a naturally cracky snare. Should i boost around 4k to get a bit more presence and bight? Also because of the transient nature of the snare i will need to add some compression.

placement before process
ull get more of a natural snare tht way
and the "crack" ur searching for

Definately best if the crack is there in a first place. Micing the bottom of the snare is another clean way of getting a little more snare in there. As far as EQ goes, i dont think 4k will give you much crack. 6-10k is where i would look. Its really gonna depend though. And be carefull because this can really make the snare thin if you use to much of it.

try adding some compression, with a slower attack than normal. a little less than 20ms gives me all the crack i need. hah

Yah a compressor with a fast attack should help alot.

I find it amazing how much of a difference there is between 10 and 15 milliseconds when compressing drums.

try playing it hard.

boost 6k

use high ratio, slow attack (40ms) and long decay (100ms)

point mic at point of impact.

Is it a really ringy snare with a lot of sustain? If so you are half dead in the water.

You are getting lots of advice about boosting EQ, but I suggest you start cutting first and see how close that gets you. Scoop a bunch around 500 Hz and also around 200, but use your ears and not my exact numbers.

I use 8 milliseconds in cakewalk (post record) and get a great crack.

If you can, try a different snare. EQing can bring the hi hat along with it and can be a problem. Mics are just going to pick up what they hear.
