Ok I have a few questions to address, In order to record I need a decent computer with at least 512mb and lots of space. I need a good sound card. A mixer, and a "preamp"? Is this right? Will someone suggest a good sound card less then $300 a good mixer less then 400$ and a good "preamp?" less then 400$. And a laptop less then 1000$

I'm looking to record bands, but track by track not all at once.

Preamps are built into mixers...unless you want to use better quality pres than your mixer would have, just use your board, they'll do ya fine. But how many tracks do you want to record? Are you recording drums? If you give that information then people can better decide what to suggest.

go to www.froogle.com and type "delta 1010"

not the 1010lt.. the regular 1010.

How about a good firewire interface with enough inputs to handle multiple instruments or a drum kit. The "Interface" has built in preamps, a firewire connection to your laptop, and you could handle mixing using software. If your budget is $1,100 (300+400+400) or less, you could pick up a fairly high quality interface and have a compact, portable setup.

Bass, lead,ry,drum, singer, singer so at least 6 tracks and if I get a firewire do i need a soundcard? I just hook up it to the laptop and it will serve as a mixer too?

Sorry, I didn't see that last comment of yours. I second Matheon, the Delta 1010 and 1010lt cards are great, I own the 1010lt myself.

Delta 1010lt

Delta 1010

The two above are basically the same except the 1010 is rack mountable, whereas the 1010lt is just a bunch of wires you connect to...but it is cheaper in price.

If you don't need so many tracks there are also...
Delta 44

Delta 66

Did the Beatles have all that when they recorded Taxman?

No soundcard is necessary if you get an interface. There are basically two ways of getting sound into a computer: Though a soundcard or an interface. (You can also get sound in by yelling at the computer, but that's only helpful if you have software/hardware conflicts). A soundcard is basically a computer board with wires. An interface is an external box, but their function is similar.

You can mix via software or hardware. Some people like external mixers. They look impressive and many people like the hands on feel of a mixer. Software mixers look like a flat, miniture version of the real thing. If you feel comfortable operating a mouse and complex software, they may be just the thing for you. Plus, they save space and the pots don't crackle! In addtion, when you buy recording software (Cubase, DP, Logic, Etc.) a mixer is included as one of many software windows.
