[Sorry if this is a duplicate; I don't think it went through on the first try.]
I'm just getting started with recording to my computer. I have only one mic, a sound card with a stereo pair of A/Ds, and no budget, so I figured a cheap mic pre (Audio Buddy) was the way to go.
Then I looked at the gear I intend to use while recording, mostly on the monitoring side (3 stereo pairs at least), and came to the realization that I really need a mixer to route all the signals to their destinations.
So I'm looking at the following gear:
Midiman Mixim 10;
Carvin SM162;
Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro.
The Mixim has a very low price and per-channel switchable phantom power going for it. It has only a pair of mic pres and it's pretty sparse on controls for the line channels though.
The Carvin is cheap for the # of channels (8 mic pres!) but the routing is limited and I'm sure someone will tell me its sound quality is dubious at best.
The Mackie seems to be the standard around here. The mic pres come highly recommended, and it offers more routing options than the others mentioned, but it's a little more money than I'd like to spend.
My head is leaning towards the Mackie, but my budget is leaning towards the Mixim or the Carvin.
What do you all think? I'm open to other suggestions. No, I'm not buying a Behringer.
Thanks in advance.
