Need hi-hat mic recommendations...

I generally use one of my AKG451s on high hats...or another similar SDC like an SE1A, NT5 or AKG391. However, some of this depends on how much "sizzle" you want. If you want to cut down on the sizzle, the Rode M3 has a more subdued high end and I used to sometimes use this (until I loaned it to a friend who never returned it) or even an SM57.

However, usually I actually WANT some sizzle and go with the SDCs.

Like Bob said the SDC's(pencil mic'c) would be your best best bet. I recently got a pair of CAD cm217's at GC(buy one get one free) for 59$ and they sound great for the price.

I'll assume you're talking studio work here. If you can swing another $99 go with the AKG451. Or a Sennheiser e914 for about $399, or a Select Electronics SE1A for $169. If you're talking live you can't beat the SM57 in that it's price range.

Yup. I use 451s all the time for live work. I'm lucky to have the old version with the screw on capsules plus a couple of swivel knuckles. These make positioning a dream--but, even without the accessories, the sound is just what I want.
