Umm someone on here said i need to space out the vocals and beat a little more because my vocals are hard to hear...what does that exactly mean and how do i acheive this sound ? ive actually never done this i usually just raise the volume on the rapp track and lower the beat..help please...ex. myspace.com/atmos there is a track please help...

I didnt get a chance to listen to the track your talking about, but if your vocals aren't sitting in the mix well such as some things being hard to hear and others being clear so to speak, try compressing the vocals some.

EQ to bring out the vocals (or subordinate the beat)

My first thought was your signal chain for vocals... sounds kind of crappy, but is that just a kind of vintage, lo-fi effect you're striving for? Kind of sounds like you're rapping though a telephone answering machine. Sounds kind of cool that way, but your main problem might be your vocal signal chain. What kind of mic/pre/converters? Might be time to upgrade the mic, or even treat your room a little.

A way less expesive thing you'll need to do is EQ the vocal. The problem is, if your vox are sharing frequencies with some of the instruments, it will be muddy. Use the EQ and even the pan to get the instruments and vox out of each other's way. You might even duplicate the vocal and eq the new vocal track with a big boost to the high frequencies, then pan the 2 vox tracks left and right 50% or so. That should make the vocal pop out a bit, for starters. Of course, the better the signal going in, the less you have to screw with it. I am in the cheap mic club myself, I have to do this shit all the time.

Love the beat, though. Just move those instruments around, left/right, high/low (frequencies) with pan and EQ. It could take hours. Fun!

OK might have to make it a little clearer on my situation, i didnt produce the beat, so i cant pan the instruments or anything at all...how would i just be able to seperate the beat from the vocals ? what would i need , i did eq and thats what it sounds like with some eq with the highs and mids up a little...umm im trying to get that style like rappers today..umm, any suggestions ??

What software are you using? What's your signal chain? Try duplicating the vocal and then eqing them seperately then panning them a little. You could even offset them a few milliseconds for a slight delay, a lot of rappers seem to like that, or even rap in unison with yourself and then pan the two tracks. BTW, there a lot of rappers with a lot of styles. You could mess around, try some weird shit and come up with your own. Barring that, who are you trying to sound like?

im not tryin to have there style of sound, i want to just beable to seperate the vocals from the background beat and make them not interfear..i dont use equipment so the signal chain i have is, into computer from the preamp, and i use the effects..im using adobe audition 1.5, and i have mdsp multiband compressor plugin and some other plug ins..

So what happened when you tried to duplicate the vocal and eq and pan each vocal seperately? Didn't work?

WHen I asked what your chain was, I meant what eqipment are you using. Which mic? WHich pre? What soundcard/interface?

Listening to tracks on myspace is not good when trying to reference a mix. I'd suggest using soundclick for that.

Myspace adds compression to your tracks, and normalizes them against the others in your player. It really kills the dynamics of your mix, and it's hard to get a good idea of what you need to work on.

thanks change i'll do that, and my mic and everything is listed on the bottom as my signature thats what i used...and i dont have any money to spare

Hey C Joker, whats your myspace link, I must of missed it? And if you want me to engineeer your tracks. Like maybe give me a sample of the beat and your vocals with no EQ or reverb, I could probadly help you out. You can email your track. I was having the same problem as you. Turns out that my vocals needed EQ between 2k-8k.

hey Change,

I wanted to ask you what levels do you set your myspace songs to? Like what mp3 bitrate( 128, 192k or higher?), how do you go by eqing your music for myspace (do u boost highs) and what levels do use (-10, -5, 0)?

thanks
