hi,

What/which/and where something is being sampled from is usually up to the producer in charge of the instrumentation (beat, melodies, bass etc...)
for example, Dr. Dre and P. Diddy both use the Akai MPC samplers. The neptunes use an asr-10, real drum kits and the Korg Triton, Timbaland uses the Triton and and I recently read that Outkast has started using Reason (the software program) If you have a good computer setup and don't plan on gigging for a while then you should go with software: Reason, Fruity Loops...etc.. Otherwise for hardware go with Akai or Korg. In my opinion you should stick to something that allows for you to make your own beats and melody. Stay away from loop playing stuff like ACID. Although they are good programs, they make people lazy....REAL lazy!! :P

hope that helps! that's just the beginning though...sampling can get pretty detailed.

try to clear things up

Anyone else....thanks for that info adam....actually i was probably lookin' for more technical stuff too....well i'll try to get a little more detailed.....i have a song that i want to sample the bassline from....not that i'd publish a song with it....but i want to use that bassline exactly.....is there a program i can use to get the drums out of the sample that i wanna use......i'm gettin' away from usin' loop programs...but i think i'm gonna use one just to experiment with for this sampling stuff. a tutorial or the like would be awesome if ya could hook up a link..... aight... Thanks Again!!!!!

is the bassline isolated in the song (does it play by itself a couple times?) if it does then you can easily extract it in Soundforge or a similar program. If if is not isolated: depending on where the bass is in the stereo image is gonna determine whether you can take it away from the drum beats...this is a bitch considering that most bass is dead center... It is impossible to extract basses from the rest of the mix when is it like that unless you have a master (which will cost you $$$$!!! and lots of it!!) or you could also extract all the drum frequencies but that never comes out good. Your best bet (if the bass doesn't play by itself) is to simply re-create the line....this CAN be done and very well. what is the bassline you're trying to sample maybe I can help you out.

I agree with Adam. If you can re-play it or have it replayed that's an answer. You can also take a nice isolated bass loop and chop up each individual note. Then sample that bass loop that you are taking about. Try to replay it with the new sounds right as you hear it. Lots of free time, some trial and error and some audio editing will get you very close.

Peace.

this is a gem that right here...

...take the sample str8...filter out the highs...that's gonna give you the bassline you want...

...if you can still hear the Drums, which you might...just play your drums on top of the ones in the sample...ie build your drum pattern around the one already there...

"Stay away from loop playing stuff like ACID. Although they are good programs, they make people lazy....REAL lazy!!"

Acid's not that bad. I have a crappy demo version - I don't use it sequence, but if you use it creatively (as in, not what it was intended for), you can use it to make loops of your own. It's good for cutting up breaks and messing about with them. It's also very handy for automatically stretching loops to the tempo of your track without any mathematics on your part.

Hmmm

I think i have the basic idea about sampling now...i'm an avid fruity loops user (who trys to stay away from looping too much) but i think i have an idea of where to go and what to do. Thanks to everyone for the help. I'll definatly be back if i have any other questions. PEACE and MCL!!!
