I plan on replacing the PUP's on my Epiphone Les Paul Custom with a Classic 57 Plus in the Bridge Position and the Classic 57 in the Neck position. Would I be better off using the same pick-up for both positions or can I use one of each? I read several reviews where guys only replaced the Bridge Position PUP and kept the stock PUP in the Neck Position which got me wondering.

I think you'd get a more balaced sound from your guitar if you replaced both pups. if you ONLY play with the bridge pup and only replaced the bridge pup you would save yourself a coupla bucks. personally I'd go ahead and do both.

I actually play the set up you mentioned in my Faded SG, and I had this set up in mind when I purchased the guitar.
57 Classic in the Neck
57 Classic Plus in the Bridge

I first replaced the Bridge pickup (it was a 490 T Humbucker). So that meant I had the 490 R in the Neck with the 57 Classic Plus in the Bridge, and it sounded good. I was pleased with it.

Then I went out and bought the 57 classic for the Neck ... trust me it is worth it, just do it. You will not regret it.

Thanks for the replies/feed-back. JB- I'll bet that SG sounds sweet! Do you still get a nice clean sound with the two pick-ups and /or just the neck position active? I believe the 57 Classic Plus in the bridge position is the ticket I just don't want to lose any of the clean sound I'm getting with the original neck pick-up.

You should be fine just replacing one pickup first. In my experience a crappy pickup and a good pickup together still sounds better than two crappy matched pickups together. However since its epiphone pickups we're talking about I suggest you replace both, since that will be a huge help. That is if you really like the guitar. If the guitar is bad its not going to make a huge difference, but at the same time if you get another guitar later you can still just take those pickups out and put them in that one. So basically my answer is if you can afford it replace both, otherwise replacing the one you use more is perfectly fine.

Since you said you like the sound you're getting out of your neck pickup then I suggest just replace the bridge first, you never know, they might compliment each other really well and sound wicked in the middle position.

Lambo...

I like the clean I get, and I usually play with both pick-ups active. However, I am not a guy that plays clean very often. I like my music like my women, dirty. So unfortunately I would not be the best guy to ask about the clean tone, but I can tell you that I like it, and that is all that really counts in my book.
