Hi folks,

I tried to post last night, but for some reason, I don't think it worked.

So again, I will make known the problem that is occurring with sonar 4. I have gotten to the point where I can map out the notes on the piano keys in sonar 4 and hear the sounds through the cans, but when I set up a drum track, I can map the beats, but cannot hear the sounds.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Greg

I gave your advice a shot, and wanted to make sure I did the correct thing. I set the midi 1 input at channel 10. The midi output is set at the particular set I choose. I still do not get any sound?

What are you using to produce the music? Samples, keyboard? VSTi?

Wow.. I am really new to this. I don't have a keyboard, but just want to map out the notes with my mouse on the screen. Is that possible to do with the drums?

Greg

MIDI is just data, you have to have a source to send that data to that actually generates the audio. MIDI itself does not make sound.

Ok, I am very sorry for my noobiness, but I am able to map out the piano notes in sonar 4 and then put them in with my track, but I will be unable to do so with the drums?

Thanks, and sorry.

Yes, you can do this with drums... but, as H2H indicated, you need a sound source.

You said you can do this with the piano. The process is the same for drums. When you create piano sounds via MIDI you must also use something for your sound source. Most likely you are using a DXi (software synthesizer) and just don't realize it. Depending on the DXi, it might also be capable of producing drum sounds.

I don't have Sonar 4, but I think it comes with the Edirol VSC DXi. So try this:

Set up a project with one MIDI track and one Audio track. Right click in the FX Bin of the Audio track, select DXi Synth from the menu that appears, and chose Edirol VSC. Then set the output of the Audio track to your sound card (or set it to Master and set the Master output to your sound card).

For the MIDI track, set the output to the Edirol VSC, set the Channel to #10, and the bank to Drum Set.

Now if you open Piano Roll View, the piano keys will correspond to drum sounds. Try clicking on them. (Note: you might have numbers or drum names in place of the piano keys. If you want the drum names there, right click in the area where the piano keyboard is normally located. From the popup window, choose Use These Note Names Instead, and from the drop down menu choose General Midi Drums - OK. Now you should have the names of the different drums where the piano keys are normally located.)

Let us know how you make out.
